Why would anyone order their coffee "extra hot"?

Not sure what kind of shitty espresso you are drinking, but it most definitely should not be bitter.

I've drunk espresso in Paris, Rome, Milan, Venice and plenty of other cities.

I can tell the difference between crappy espresso and decent espresso. Most people would describe espresso with no sugar as bitter, in the same way that very dark chocolate is bitter.
 
ive found most places make pretty poor espresso since almost everybody just gets it dumped in a cup of milk, syrup n whipped cream. in my experience, a good espresso should be light and flavorful. definitely not bitter.

I never heard of drinking espresso with anything more than perhaps a twist of citrus peel. AFAIC, if you add cream or sugar, it's no longer espresso.

I think what he's saying is that since they are usually mixing the espresso with a bunch of other shit they don't really care if it has a good flavor to begin with.
 
Was sitting in the coffee shop this morning and listening to the orders. I can understand half-caf, light soy, mocha venti latte, sweet-n-low with extra whipped cream and so on but I got to wondering -

who orders coffee Extra Hot? several people did. Do they have a long way to drive before they're drinking coffee - if so, why not just wait until later to get it not-extra-hot? It's not like coffee shops are hard to find. Do some people have a really high heat tolerance? Are they going to cook something in it - heat up lunch, maybe? Do they have something to disinfect?

I'm mystified. Why?

Black coffee is still plenty hot IMO, but the coffee drinks like mochas and caramel macchiatos are almost always barely above room temperature. I think part of that is a function of the additional ingredients being cold, and part is a function of them hedging their bets on you being retarded, spilling coffee in your crotch and then suing them for 10 million for a 2nd degree burn.
 
Thanks gang. I've gotten some great answers to my original question. I no longer think it's a strange idea to get coffee "extra hot".

i'm pretty sure the correct brew temp is slightly under boiling, so extra hot doesn't make any sense..other than to over cook your coffee

Not necessarily. Espresso is just a way to brew the coffee. Forcing pressurized hot water through densely packed grounds. It results in a stronger coffee than drip methods. Espresso, latte, cappuccino, mocha, americano, and macchiato are all variants of the same thing.

Espresso: espresso served black, in a small, shot sized cup.
Latte: shot of espresso served in a regular cup, mixed with milk
Cappucchino: similar to a latte, but milk is foamed
Mocha: adds chocolate to cappucchino
Americano: espresso shot and hot water, to dilute
Caffe macchiato: milk and foam spooned onto espresso
 
not everyone just gets to sit around a coffee shop all day waiting for their check to come.

The obvious answer is there is a long drive they have ahead.
 
I know a guy who orders his starbucks extra hot. He does so to differentiate his order from the orders of others. When the barista completes the coffee she'll say something like "blah blah latte extra hot". Then he knows it is his.
