Why would anyone order their coffee "extra hot"?

Was sitting in the coffee shop this morning and listening to the orders. I can understand half-caf, light soy, mocha venti latte, sweet-n-low with extra whipped cream and so on but I got to wondering -

who orders coffee Extra Hot? several people did. Do they have a long way to drive before they're drinking coffee - if so, why not just wait until later to get it not-extra-hot? It's not like coffee shops are hard to find. Do some people have a really high heat tolerance? Are they going to cook something in it - heat up lunch, maybe? Do they have something to disinfect?

I'm mystified. Why?

Because coffee isn't served hot like it should be because moronic twits sue because coffee is hot. WELL NO FUCKING SHIT IT'S HOT YOU FUCKING MORONS!

So now you have to specifically order it HOT instead of just warm.

Can the coffee shop even control the temperature at which the coffee comes out?

The taste of coffee changes as it decreases in temperature. After the coffee reaches your hand it will be many degrees cooler compared to what it was brewed at. So order extra hot to compensate.

Coffee tastes better when it's hotter, even up to the point where it causes some pain.

Being very hot is usually necessary for proper brewing/extraction but I find that most of the more complex coffees (like Etheopian) tend to liven up after they have cooled down a bit.

I think our taste buds have an operating range of temperature where things need to be for optimal flavor tasting. Too hot or too cold and you short them out.

As for the "extra hot" I got no clue what the do for that. Stick it in the microwave for another minute or two?

Maybe some people enjoy a molten maga double shot extra bold soy milk americano.

My grandfather will brew himself a pot of coffee, pour himself a cup then put the cup in the microwave to make it even hotter.

I bet people will pay an extra buck or 2 for this. One pot next to the other, same damn equipment and just charge the wackos more.

Order extra hot to accommodate the ride to the destination.

Back when I had a nearly 1.5 hour commute to school, I would make coffee at home and put it in a thermos. One day I forgot the coffee in the thermos until the next morning. It was still warm. Not hot, but not lukewarm either.

Saved tons of money too since you can buy 500 grams of ground coffee beans for the price of 2 cups of coffee at the coffee shop.

If your coffee sucks, then I can see this being the case.

I guarantee the coffee from my french press isn't "extra hot" after four minutes, but it tastes fantastic.

I remember my grandparents church coffee being ridiculously strong and cook your tongue hot. They drank that stuff like it was water too. I think being Lutheran you have to drink it though to get closer to god

I've worked at cafes for a couple of years and 99% of people who ask for "extra hot" are old people. No idea why.

If you're drinking real coffee then obviously each cup is made to order so it's easy to control temperature. If you're drinking that watery, muddy filter shit that Yanks call 'coffee' then I guess you nuke it for a couple of minutes.

Ugh, I hate it when I burn my taste buds. Can't taste shit for the next day or two. Coffee is best when brewed just under boiling temp, but I like to let it cool down just a bit before I start drinking it.
