Why would anyone in their right mind play Minecraft?

About a month ago I noticed my 9 year old nephew playing this weird, 8 bit cheesy graphic online game. I thought 'meh'.

He would go on and on about it, and I watched him play a little as he described the fun of tearing up cheesy 8 bit graphic blocks and combining elements to create new items.

Now I notice everyone and their brother wasting time on this. All over youtube, everywhere.

Why? :|

I don't know myself. I forced myself to play it for a while and could not see the appeal at all. It was just dumb and boring.

It is a sort of creative outlet for me. I don't play too often, but when I do I enjoy building neat little structures as if I were playing with Lego blocks. Do you like Lego? :p It's practically the same thing, but digital.

Because it's fun as hell.

Even more so if you find a decent server where they can add a ton more to the game like a economy, protection of your buildings, and a ton of great other features.

I used to play with Legos in 2nd or 3rd grade, I cant remember. It was 1977 or 1978 afterall. D:

Not to mention the stuff you can make with redstone dust, people have made computers within the game itself.

Also you can make cannons to blow crap up.

I never really understood how this in-game circuitry crap works, including wiremod for Garry's mod, and I take plenty of EE classes.

I saw this one guy try to build a fireplace into his minecraft house and uncontrollably burn the whole thing down. It was quite comical.

My first thought was meh, too.

Then i started playing it, & still felt meh because i had no idea how to make things (no knowledge of crafting recipes).

Next time i opened up the game i had the crafting recipes wiki open in another window.
And i played basically the entire weekend.

It's an awesome sandbox game, where you can build anything, or if you're like me, can explore caves for hours finding resources, etc. :D

It's because there's so much you can do. It's a different type of game for everybody. I personally like the creative part of it, and enjoy building stuff and making giant murals out of different colored materials. Others like surviving, where they try to arm themselves with whatever they can and survive the onslaught of monsters every night. Cave exploring is also fun too, because every map is generated semi-randomly so you'll never see the same stuff twice. Some of the landscape and caves generated are awesome.

It's hard to explain why it's so great, but once you find the little niche of the game that you like it's hard to put down.

Yeah, I don't really get it either, but whatever. If you think it's fun, go for it.

I've taken the time to build a huge castle and city on a server with several other friends. We have fully functional subway system. You walk to the station, push a button for which direction you want to go, push a button to bring the minecar to your location. The car stops in front of you, you get in triggering other electronics to send a booster cart next to you, sending you off in your chosen direction.

You can be freakin brilliant in this game.

My castle had huge keeps on either side of the draw bridge, a big wall all the way around the castle courtyard complete with murder holes, there's a castle in the courtyard complete with dungeon, hidden passages, its own keeps that jet up into the sky higher than the courtyard walls (and all the walls were spider proofed, too). Upon leaving the castle via drawbridge that bridges the gap across the moat (because my castle was built at the center of a big ol' lake :D), you find yourself passing two guard houses on either side on the mainland. I have horse stables for my nights complete with farrier workshop, a gallows, a stockade, a village complete with small homes that are fully furnished, a foreman's office and mine entrance, a dock with a harbor master's office and dock warehouses, an actual dock out over the water, a pirate ship moored to the end of the dock complete with working canons that shoot arrows (other projectiles don't do damage), the entire city is surrounded by walls with small keeps periodically...

I could go on and on. It's really neat to be at the max render range on the hill overlooking the castle when the sun comes up behind it.

It's sooooo much fun to be on teamspeak talking with friends who are also building while building all this stuff.

...especially when you sneak over to someone else's construction site with a 'splody green penis chasing you and try to get him to blow up next to other players mwuahahahahaha

Sounds like youve had a good time. My nephews eyes would probably pop out of his head if the saw the subway you built. He watches videos of people playing Minecraft. Its madness, madness I say! D:

Personally, I just cant get over the 8 bit graphics thing. Oh well.

Eh, the graphics are what allow for the gameplay. Everything based off of a specific size block. Which allows you to build and destroy the world as you see fit. There are different texture packs for the blocks, but ultimately the world needs to be made up of a standard unit for this to work decently.
