Why would anyone buy a card besides 4200, 9800 pro or X800 pro?

These first 2 have really been the only ones worth buying new price/performancewise for the past year or so, and the X800 just dominates right now.

The 6800GT shows a lot of potential for overclocking to 6800 Ultra levels at about $300. Not a bad buy if it works out.

In response to the topic title,

Ppl buy top hi-end cards cause price isn't a obstacle when your after the best. On the opposite spectrum others don't need a gaming card but can do fine with a extremely low end card for basic applications.

Lets see, 5900XT, 9700/Pro, 9800 SE (softmod), 6800GT, need I list more?

And I could say the same, "Why would anyone buy a castrated X800pro when you can spend 100 bucks more for faster memory and 33% more pipes", or "why not buy a Geforce 6800GT for the same price, same performance, more potential, more pipes, newer architecture?"

Thats a mightly broad stroke considering the varied uses and various cards available at various prices and at various times.

The x800 isn't out yet, and the x800pro is barely available and not exactly a bargain everywhere it is available.

on and on.

The 6800 is not available.
9800 SE softmod is essentially the same as 9800 pro.
5900 and 9700 series are cards inferior to the 9800 Pro that cost about the same price.

Anything else?

You asked WHY would anyone BUY ANYTHING ELSE. And you answered your own question, and we've also answered it.
We will wait for 6800 (so we don't buy anythign right now) if we wanted to.
The 9800 SE costs 70 dollars less than the Pro. (duh?)
The 5900 series are Inferior to the 9800 series only IN PRICE (they do not provide as good price/performance EXCEPT the 5900XT, which are very good price/performance.) That is the only reason this whole Radeon 9800 Pro craze started, when it became god to many people.
The 9700 series is discontinued, if you buy it used you will get great prices, but its much harder to get good deals on the highly in demand 9800 pros. Either way, they're aways spaced 30-50 dollars from each other, for the performance those dollars buy, its NOT good price/performance.

Anything else?

You might have heard of a few sites called www.anandtech.com or www.tomshardware.com, look at the benchies.

well, a couple months back, my bro scored a BFG 5900 for $165-170 new. he was able to flash it to a 5950. at the time, 9800 pros were still $50 or so more. all things considered, the 5900 was an excellent buy

I got my radeon 9500 for $140 new and softmodded it to a 9700 pro. My system gets virtually the same framerates in games as most computers do with a 9800 pro...I wouldn't exactly call 9700s inferior, especially when you can get one for the price I did. You make it sound like they're bad pieces of hardware.

You're posts never have much to say except,"I like ATI video cards".

Why are ppl so restrictive on which video cards to buy? ATi and nVidia come out with all these different variations of cards to fit the needs of their customers. Not everyone can afford a $400 X800, or even a $200 9800pro. That does not mean they can't get a find card for $120-150. Quit looking down upon cards like the 9600XT or the 5700Ultra. I bet you anything that the manufacturers would love to for everyone to be able to go out and spend money on a 9800p/x800/5950U (cards that bring in a higher profit %), but the truth is, they know everyone can't afford it, so they spend their time and effort on making cards that still offer a high level of performance but with not all the high clock speeds and features of their top end lines (i.e. 9800SE).

Give it a rest. If you can get past their cheater drivers (a big IF) the X800s are still old school tech. Some of us want to see the PS3 versions of games this year? We've already played with the R300 core enough? ATI has sold it to me twice- they may well have to come up with something new to get me to buy again.

I dont see much point to this unless you just want to boost ATI for some reason.. if thats how you feel, fine but no point in a whole thread dedicated to it, when your just planning on saying, "6800 isnt available, anything else?"
Duh.

This thread isnt genuine, its propaganda.
The problem is, the 6800GT outclasses the X800Pro. When its available your little delusion is over.
Moments of fleeting glory.

yeah, total domination, wiped the slate with all the benchmarks

let's not even get into OpenGL games, has the X800 even beat the 6800U at an OpenGL game? NV is bringing the ball into ATI's court, and stealing and assisting, and scoring....

Open your mapleleaf pupils and see the real picture...really, I am serious, look at that chart, dont assume ATI won them all, coz you are sadly mistaken.

And that related to the X800Pro how exactly?
Other than it's a different card in a different price point.

Lets look at some benchies, shall we?

Here we are looking at Far Cry Performance:
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=2044&p=11
Is it just me or is the X800 XT raping the 6800 U?

Okay lets take a look at HALO also
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=2044&p=12
Again, ATI is the clear winner.

Now lets look at Ut2004
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=2044&p=17
WOW the 6800 is faster? Wait, no its not. As soon as AA and AF are turned ATI wins again!

How about homeworld performance?
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=2044&p=13
HAHA ATI rapes nvidia again!

Now lets look at these old games that nVidia seems to be winning at, enemy territory
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=2044&p=20
Wow look at that? Nvidia can beat ATI at an old game and ATI ONLY gets 65FPS @ 1600x1200 4xAA 8xAF. UNPLAYABLE on an ATI CARD!?

Okay buddies, thats enough. All you nVidiots need to stop looking at all these currently useless features such as PS3.0 on the 6800U. You all keep claiming that it has better performance on OLD openGL games, yet you talk about future features? I thought you played old games, why would you care about PS3.0?

Seriously, X800 XT is the current king of the benchies. And who gives a crap about them "cheating". Since when is attaining better performance cheating? In fact, im glad ATI cheated. I want ATI to cheat so hard that I get amazing performance with no degrated image quality! Have fun with your 2 slot, 480 watt, inferior product:)

Well, I guess for me, it would be that nvidia is my preference and it is much newer technology that ATI offers. Not saying that ATI's technology doesn't do the job well, because it does, its just a little cooler to have the latest greatest technology rather that a revision of a 2 + year old design base.

Trying to get an idea of how your mind works (or doesn't work) in thinking that the X800 dominates right now. Do you say this because you cant buy a 6800 yet of any flavor? If you go by that way of thinking, then yes, the X800 dominates because you cant buy a 6800 yet. As far as performance goes, the X800 fill short of the 6800GT more times than not and the 6800GT displayed superior image quality.

So, that said, if all cards were available right now at this moment for retail purchase, the 6800GT would seem to be the best performance for the money. And would you please stop (if you can) making these dumb A$$ threads that most plainly exposes your biased opinions? Appreciated.

Whats funny is that you talk so much of ATI raping, and then when it does lose in a benchmark "oh, its still going at 65 fps, its still playable"

Whats ever better is that you haven't seemed to keep up with current events. nVidia lowered the power spec for the 6800U saying that a 350W with a good 12v rail will run it just fine (as many sites have confirmed) and that the 2nd connector is really only useful for overclockers.

I'm not proclaiming nVidia to be god, but I think they have a better solution this round (as I have with the current gen of tech). They have some options that don't directly relate to gaming that simply aren't going to be found on a ATI card.

In conclusion, STFU noob.
