Why would a reviewer do this?

Conclusion page of X800XT review on GamePC.com

Okay, I can understand benchmarking the X800XT against the best cards available today but I don't understand a quote like this...

"It?s the fastest thing on the market, and unless nVidia has something magical up their sleeves, it will remain so for the foreseeable future."

It's not up their sleeves and it's not magical. It's the soon to be released 6800 series of cards. I know they aren't available in the public right now but other sites have reviewed beta cards and included them in benchmarks. Here the reviewer almost spoke as if he wasn't aware of Nvidia's 6800 series that will directly compete with the X800 series. I think this review was quite misleading. To not include benchmarks of the 6800 is one thing but to not even mention that they are just around the corner is another.

EDIT: Title changed

Nvidia probably wouldn't give them a board to test with so they decided not to mention it. I am not saying this was the intelligent thing to do but probably what happened.

It's a rather biased view, they should have at least included the 6800gt, as it has made it to the market. I just wish people would stop proclaiming victory until all contenders have been released.

Well if their reviews are biased how does that lend to their credibility?

Ya they should have word perfect and star office here too. Get real. These so-called reviews are from a vendor pushing the products they are "reviewing" natually they will show what they sale in the best possible light anything less would be idotic.

Get real? Come on... I doubt Microsoft will be selling Star Office or Word Perfect anytime soon. I'm guessing GamePC will sell the 6800 line when they are released though.

My point is it's stupid to paint a picture that isn't true. Not everyone reads tech websites or researches their hardware purchases. Perfect example... A friend of mine wanted to upgrade his wife's video card. I had a Gainward Ti-4200 128MB I told him I'd sell him for $100 (good deal at the time). He opted for a brand new FX5200. It was newer so it had to be better, right? 😉

A review like that should state "Advertisement" or not be called a review at all. At least when they do it in the newspaper it's clearly stated it's an ad and not a real editorial or article.

But when they write a one-sided editorial or article, they don't stick a big warning on it telling you that you should go read other sources to get the full picture, either. :disgust:

What's the problem? He mentions the upcoming 6800 cards -- twice -- and says that a) for now, the X800XT is the fastest card you can get, and b) he thinks it will be faster than any of the 6800s (and considering the results versus the 6800U so far, this is quite possibly correct).

With a price tag so high, cards like the Radeon 9800XT and X800 Pro look like much better values for the money

This is straight out of the conclusion. I can't believe they said a 9800XT was a good value for the money compared to an X800 XT. $350 vs. $450 = 9800XT vs. 9800XT x 2 performance. Buh?

Not only do they write crappy "reviews", but they also rip their customers off.

Quite possibly correct? Maybe if the only games made were shader heavy DrectX9 titles, I would accept this. However, the 6800 Ultra beats the X800 XT in every single OpenGL benchmark I have ever seen. These cards are both great and both have there advantages/disadvantages, but to claim one the hands down winner is simply false.

That was my entire point. The reviewer leads one to believe that the X800 is the best available now and will be for everything in the future as well. I think we've all seen enough benchmarks that show both cards are an excellent choice and who wins all depends on which benchmark involved.
