Why would a phone ring five times, and then give a busy signal?

Called my friend, and the phone rang five times, and then I got what sounded like a busy signal. In all my life any time I've ever gotten a busy signal it happens before any rings. This was the first time I had rings before the busy signal. How would that happen? Was the person avoiding my call somehow?

Are you certain it was a busy signal and not the disconnected one?

Was it a cell phone you called? He could have pushed the busy button on his phone, though usually that leads you to his voicemail directly.

Yes it was a cell. I have never heard of a phone having a busy button. Does that really exist?

if its a cell phone then it could have been a valid busy signal.

what happens with cells is that you dial and hit send, then the network has to locate the other cell wherever it is (roaming, out of local area, whatever). you hear a "ring" on your side even though the phone ISNT ringing on the other side. This is so you don't think the call failed because its silent. Nextel (i think...) actually says "please wait while the cellular phone is being located" or something like that.

Anyway, the phone could have really been busy. Usually cell's done have a "send a busy signal" button on them, just direct to voicemail if ignored.

Or... it could be set to forward to another number if she doesn't answer within a certain number of rings... and the forwarded to number could be busy.

QFT on this and the fact that it also may have been forwarded to a busy phone line. In addition, it might be possible that her phone carrier's voicemail has capacity issues??

Maybe that is her voicemail message. I did that once on my home answering machine... it was hilarious to hear people's reaction when it beeped after 5 seconds of busy signal. I'd get lots of "Yah, it's weird, it was busy, then it beeped... I don't if I'm supposed to leave a message or what. This guys answering machine is f-ed up. What a dumbass...."

Then, they'd call back ans say "Yah's doing it again. I guess his machine is broken."
