I was contacted a while back about a piece of software I had programmed. The company publishing it was wondering if it could be converted from the old source (piece done as a CD only project - now they wanted it online - It was done using Flash components but it would be complicated as the underlying code used classes of a totally different nature). I knew the pieces and could do it for, what i thought, was a relatively cheap price and time frame. They decided they didn't want to go with me - which I said okay - if you need any help you will be charged my standard hourly rate. A few months go by and i hear nothing new so i think they must've found someone else
Fast forward to a couple weeks ago. A get a message from the old company asking if I still had the original source as they had lost it (which if i didn't...well...i cannot even imagine what they would do then...). They had secured a bid, have another programmer in place ready to go and now needed the source so they could begin production. Now 2 things immediately hit me: 1. why would someone put in a bid without knowing what they were converting? 2. why would a company accept a bid without knowing what they are getting into?
I received an email today from the new "programmer" - a gentleman from India who types broken English asking for help. I can only imagine how cheaply he must be working for as he references a "team".
