I am surprised that the US needs aid. It is the wealthiest nation on the planet and has one of the best infrastructures in place.

We owe the rest of the world $8,000,000,000,000. They're just protecting their investment! 🙂

exactly, just what strings do the Middle Eastern Countries (or any oild exporting country for that matter) need to attach other than, continue to buy our oil.

shoot where would the middle eastern countries be with US to buy their oil?

For that matter, where would China be without us buying their products? US goes into recession, they all feel the pain. The NOLA disaster could just as well slip us into into a recession, especially given the price of gas in this country.

Oh, and I didn't mean to infer that there were or were not strings attached. I just don't know the answer to that one. 🙂

I believe the idea is that you can use that money to help with the evacuation and reconstruction. You know, pay off those relief workers and possibly hire more? Build temporary areas for the evacuees?

There isn't a problem getting workers or equipment at any price. It's the logistics of what to do once they're there. They have to be fed as well as the victims. They'll get shot at and overwhelmed with too many people trying to board small vehicles, etc. etc...

money always makes things easier.

with more money you get more options.

NBC "Meet The Press". 10:00AM EDT Sunday mornings. This morning was about Kartrina and aftermath. Russert talked to Chertof, president of St Bernard Parrish, Governor of Mississippi, two scientists and an ecnomist.

Broussard, president of the parrish got a little emotional to say the least.

Only later, not now. Trying to move people out, and feed and house them once they are out. The logistics are a nightmare, and money just isn't a factor.

he was very emotional...was he talking about his mom? I didn't hear the beginning of the story...

He was talking about the mother of the Emergency Manager. She apparently drowned in her hospital bed Friday, awaiting evacuation.

The US should accept any help with grace, in times of crises no matter how large or powerful you are, there's always a need for foreign aid.

My country, Canada, will provide all the help we can, this is what were known for so let us help damnit!

Anyways, with the way Bush handled the situation I feel he's not going to accept most of the aid, he's embarased himself enough as is :disgust:.

exactly. never have i heard any country hit by a natural disaster turning down aids being offered from other countries.

Qatar and every country in the region better be giving us relief $, if it weren't for the US Saddam or Iran would be ruling their country.

MEXICO: The country is sending 15 truckloads of water, food and medical supplies via Texas and the Mexican navy has offered to send two ships, two helicopters and 15 amphibious vehicles.
Yuck, while donations are nice, you guys can keep your water...

This:

Jefferson Parish President (sobbing).

"The guy who runs this building I'm in, the emergency management. He's responsible for everything.
His mother was trapped in St. Bernard Nursing Home.
And everyday she called him and said, 'Are you coming, son? Is somebody coming?'
And he said, 'Yeah, mama. Somebody's coming to get ya.
Somebody's coming to get you on Tue.
Somebody's coming to get you on Wed.
Somebody's coming to get you on Thu.
Somebody's coming to get you on Fri.
And she drowned...Fri night. She drowned on Fri. night"

"Nobody's coming to get us.
Nobody's coming to get us.
The Secretary's promised. Everybody's promised.
They've had press conferences...I...I'm sick of the press conferences.
For God's sakes, shut up and send us somebody."

He also gave several examples of FEMA turning back assistance and also cutting their communication lines.

I don't think they are even sweating donations of $100 million+.

Countries like Qatar and the U.A.E. have been minting US money so fast in the past two years that they don't know what to do with it. We are talking about hundreds of billions in extra profits once the price of oil doubled from $30 to $60 (and now almost $70) per barrel. Imagine what would happen to your business model if your operating costs stayed constant while your revenues doubled.

In the U.A.E., the nation's latest game is to continually out-do itself in building super luxury hotels. Development in the region is insane. I believe the newest hotel will be built on a man-made island shaped like a palm tree.

The development boom in the region began in earnest after 9/11 and the beginning of the Iraq war. Investors from the region pulled their billions from the then-failing US markets (not only because of losses, but also because of fear of seizure) and the investment exodus only multiplied after ill-will because of the war in Iraq. Countless billions pulled out of the US went right into development in their own region.

$100 million is a great PR move, and an effortless way to give back to the country that made them so rich in the first place.

$100 million from Qatar and $500 million from Kuwait will help our country in a small way, but unfortunately, it will not excuse our failure to help ourselves in the critical days right after the storm.

-- Mexico has offered $1 million and is sending 15 truckloads of water, food and medical supplies via Texas. The Mexican navy has offered to send two ships, two helicopters and 15 amphibious vehicles.

Uhhh, okay. If they're gonna drink the water from mexico, may as well just drink the flood water 😛
