Why Won't my Windows 2000 Shut Down?

So, um, what's the deal here?

I have to select Start > ShutDown like 4-5 times before it actually shuts down. It just allows me to select it, then kicks back to the desktop like nothing was selected. I notice things going away in the taskbar... so I figure it just takes awhile... but, nope, even if I leave it for a while, it doesn't shut down unless I select it like 5 times!

This makes no sense... and is so far my only complaint against Win2k (except for its unwillingness to run Civ3 for some weird reason... but that's beside the point)

Its more than likely some stubborn service which is refusing to stop and thats stopping the machine shutting down...

Do you have any weird software on there?

Oh and shouldn't this be in the OS forum

It could be my DSL software..... blaming Verizon is always nice

So, I've heard!

Try disabling the DSL software and I bet it shuts down first time.

You may also need to end it's process(es) in Windows Task Manager. It may take some time to figure out where they are in the list.

This is what I need to do because i run some "weird" software called X10 Home control.

Is your computer named HAL? Computers named HAL don't like to be shut down. I suggest you sleep with one eye open.

I had this problem but instead of just going back to the desktop I got these weird ass error messages. So I powered down manually (turn the surge protector off and then on, cause there was no way to shut down, no matter what I did) and it was a program I recently installed. So if you just changed anything on your comp, revert back.

what are you using for anti-virus software ? I've seen this issue before and totally uninstalling /reinstalling the anti-virus
solved the issue. I think sometimes when the DAT files get updated that things get a little messed up.
