Why won't my computer post???

One day the computer just decided not to post. No beep no nothing. I have taken the normal steps in seeing what could possibly be wrong, but to no avail. Anyone have any idea why the computer would just stop working one day? My system is a athlon 1ghz on a MSI micro atx board. Any help would be appreciated.

What are the "normal steps" you've taken? Be specific.

What happens when you press the power button? Is there any life?

Also, basic IBM interview question, is the computer plugged in?

when i press the power button everything turns on. the cdrw, dvd, hard drive, and the cpu/heatsink gets warm to touch...but the computer won't even give me the post beep. i have taken all the pci cards out and reisntalled them one by one. i have secured all the ide connections as long as the power adapters fromt he PSU. i have also reinstalled the cpu and heatsink to make sure they are properly installed. i have taken the batter out from the mobo in hopes of clearing the mobo bios. what else should i do?

i have had this computer for about a month.

Maybe a dead vid card? Try starting your system with out anything but one stick of ram and ur processor.

You still need a vid card to POST. Try that, tough...except with the vid card in. Mobo, CPU, 1 stick o' RAM, vid card. Unplug drives and peripherals.

You know last night I got the same thing. It has been running fine for 3 months then last night it would post or anything after it had been running fine earlier in the day. My onboard sound tells me the System Failed CPU Test. Anyways have you tried switching the PSU?

If your PC wont even POST (ie. no beeps at all), then it's either your mobo or CPU is dead... It happened to me around 2 years ago, and after I upgraded the mobo and CPU it worked fine...

If it's your video card, your system should still beep and tell you there's no video...

The fact is the mobo should give you a beep tone to the fact the cpu is dead if in fact it is!!!!

Once you do what maggorty has stated then you really need to start swapping components and see if you can isolate it....

try a diff PSU...Try a diff mobo....try a diff cpu....try a dif stick of ram...

can you tell if motherboard is gettiing power? do you have a second computer or a friend that will let you play with his/hers?

I think your mobo is dead. However, it could be your video card, RAM, or CPU. First thing I would try is switching to different RAM. Then try a different video card. I doubt it is your CPU.

Try to rule out the grounding problem by taking the motherboard out of case with only video card, and 1 stick of ram.
