It's been going on for a while now. How do I configure media player (or what codecs do i need) so that media player will play avi's? I have divx player..but it totally slows down my computer when I play movie files on it. Can someone help please???

Divx, Xvid, and AC3 .. those are the only 3 i have installed and it plays anything i throw at it

alternately, use GSpot to tell you what codecs an AVI uses.

what version of wmp do you have? the latest is 9 I believe...
are your avi's really divx?
If you install ( it will usually remove the older version...but do a add/remove of the older version.

Huh? uninstall what? the AC3 codec? I went to the add/remove and it's not there.

As for the avi's...media player won't play them at all...when I try to open one up in media player, it says some kind of error.

and I was told to not get the newest version of wmp...b/c it sucks. So i think i have 7.

Not that I can see... :-\

EDIT: sorry! it was just a little sound problem. fixed after i restarted. Everything's fine now...heh. but i still can't play avi's in media player. Bleh.

AVI files are generic wrappers around sound and audio codecs, you need the appropriate codec to play any files that were created with that codec. Most DivX videos use MP3 for the audio so make sure you have both of those codecs installed.

use GSpot in my above post. It will tell you the codec you need.

really I have 9 and it handles everything..I also have the divx 5 codec. But no errors on anything.

I occassionally have this problem - you can either use the Divx Player (that can come bundled with the latest Divx codec) or you can use the VLC player - I use VLC for all video files, and it hasn't failed once. get VLC here

I'm not sure it'll help, but look for Nimo on yahoo..
and for me when I've divx installed (without running it) then avi files are opened fine by wmp..
try..

DivX codec v5.05
Installation

To play DivX movies you first need to install the DivX codec on your computer. The DivX codec v5.05 is the latest version of the DivX codec and it's fully backwards compatible with all previous versions of the DivX codec. To install the DivX codec v5.05 for Windows, follow these easy steps:

1) Download the right DivX codec for your os Windows(3.2MB), Mac(1.7MB) or Linux(256KB).
2) Double-click on the downloaded file to start the installation
3) Follow the instructions in the installation program

After you've installed the DivX codec v5.05 on your computer, Windows Media Player will be able to play all versions of DivX movies (DivX v3.x, DivX v4.x, DivX v5.x). If you run into any problems, please refer to the DivX FAQ for solutions to common DivX codec installation and playback problems.
If you're having problems and wish to try a quick solution, download This Codec. Please note that there's no need to install this version of the DivX codec if you've already got the DivX codec v5.05 installed on your computer as it is fully backwards compatible. However, if you for some reason are having problems with the new codec you could try this codec and see if it works better.

Finally a suggestion for ffdshow. FFDShow is the only video codec (along with AC3 filter) you will ever need. FFDShow plays all divx files and xvid.
