why windows still beats linux!

Just a random thought. I would love to quit paying for windows upgrades and switch to linux, but the one thing that's holding me back is not enough game developers are making linux ports (idsoftware is the only one that comes to mind). There was a company that would rewrite code to linux, but they went out of business 🙁. Wine doesn't cut it either. Other than gaming, and visual studio.net ide =), windows 4 has no advtantage over linux (windows is easier to use though).

I'm kind of expecting Ameesh to be on this thread like a fly on a steaming pile of dog excrement.. 😛

Remember though, not everyone is a gamer.

Also, part of the problem with Linux is that in the open source model, everyone wants to work on the eye candy and all the fun stuff, but not so much on unglamorous nuts and bolts. Still, I think Linux (and the GPL) is a great idea; Microsoft needs a sharp thorn in the side.

Bingo.

<--- not a gamer

Give me something small, fast, efficient, free, pretty, easy to upgrade, compatible and I'll switch in a heart beat.

Windows also comes equipt with the "BSOD" feature!

I only get a BSOD everytime I try to shut down Win 2k. Nothing frequent 😉
Well, except I shut down every day.

That is like comparing a hammer to a screwdriver. Windows is a decent desktop OS, linux can make an excellent webserver/ftpserver/router/gateway/firewall/other sundry network device. I don't think either particularly beats the other in the respect that they seem to cater in design to different tasks. Just my 2¢.

The only time I've see a BSOD on Win2k or XP is when a laptop user yanked out a CDRW drive in the middle of burning a disk. That was 2 years ago.

I have yet to see one since then. And this is on roughly 75 machines.

Thats the way it should be, as a service to the OS user, free and easy to get updates. I guess redhat has to turn a profit somewhere.

In the two + years I've been using XP, I've had one blue screen, and that was due to crappy ATI drivers (surprise?).

And for the games issue, as long as people keep making games based on ID's engines, there should be too much of an problem 😀

DO a little reading, and you'll find that almost every game out there has been modded to be able to be used on Linux. The 3d drivers for linux are awesome, too. I've played UT2003 @ 1600x1200 without so much as a hiccup in the graphics.

I need some war3 support =)

as for bsod, I don't blame them on microsoft. I blame the companies that create the drivers
I used to get bsods with netgear, which i then replace w/ a dlink
and I was getting bsods with my sblive plat b4 reinstalling drivers.
I'm just a cheap bastard that doesn't wanna pay $$ for software when free alternatives are available 🙂
I also wanna curb my warezing habits, now that i'm out of college.
win2k legit is still quite expensive 😛

I've never seen a BSOD on my Win2k computer. I think the last time I saw one was with Win98.

Calling Windows a "desktop OS" is like calling a nuclear warhead a firecracker; it seriously undervalues the power.

Maybe you should switch from Windows to PlayStation 2, seems to have everything you want.

na, I'm a pc gamer 4 life
only console games I like are final fantasy tatics, final fantasy6, castlevania symphony of the night and all my NES games =)
na, these days, consoles are pretty much mini pcs that specialize in 3d/graphic output, I wanna keep it all in 1 system. I would hate to dual boot, but that might be the case.
