Why windows pro or ultimate over home for games ?

IS there any reason to get anything other than windows home for a machine that is strictly used for games and file sharing (via samba) with a linux box ?

From the comparison it sounds like the xp vm does not support graphic comparison and samba is not using directory services. bit locker looks interesting i gues for encrypting thumb drives but probalby not worth the cost.

Did i miss something ?

No. I don't have the product matrix here in front of me right now, but I went with Home Premium and I don't feel like I'm missing a thing.

Ok thanks. I guess the xp vm would be nice if it supported graphics accel. but from waht I've read it does not so it is worthless for games (probably not better than wine).

I guess I'll go with home p.

The XP VM is more for business use; old proprietary applications and stuff, not gaming. It might be good if you have a 15 year old paint program you can't live without, but otherwise, not so much.

VMware and Virtualbox both support at least partial 3d graphics acceleration in VMs on Windows guests (Virtualbox also supports 3d acceleration in Linux guests, provided you can get it working consistently - it is hit and miss for me....).

Since you can run either of these under Win7 Home Premium (unlike XP Mode which has the artificial restriction of running only under Pro or Ultimate), I say go with Home Premium unless you just specifically need the features of Pro or Ultimate.

Home is best for most people. What PRO adds is more for the workplace segment, advanced security features for networking, group policies, etc.

Only "ultimate" feature I use is running the system in Japanese rather than English. Only Ultimate / Enterprise have the Language packs.

pro has some more advanced networking stuff and especially concerning privileges on shares. Plus it has a remote desktop server, eg you can connect to it with remote desktop.

But home premium is enough for most people.

Home for Gaming.

Pro gets you hard drive encryption, support for networking Domains, and some other items. None of which do anything at all for a gaming rig.

Yea I looked at the comparison before asking the question. My inclination then was that Home was the way to go (bit locking might be interesting; and xp emulation would be if it was done as well as the alternatives).

After reading the responses I sitll think Home is the way to go 🙂

Is there an explicit 32/64 bit version or one verison fit all? (I suspect from what I've read one fits all).
