Story is just now unfolding. Senate votes 63-37 to loosen Bush's federal funding ban for embroyonic stem cell research. Is a veto looming? Bush's first veto!

CNN link.

Good it will really show the Anti-Science and Anti-American that he is in clear black and white for the history books and the cause of the downfall of America.

Bush says using Stem Cells is Murder

7-19-2006 Bush vetos stem cell bill

WASHINGTON - Pleadings from celebrities, a former first lady and fellow Republicans did not move President Bush from his determination to reject, with the first veto of his presidency, a bill expanding federally funded embryonic stem cell research.

"The president believes strongly that for the purpose of research, it's inappropriate for the federal government to finance something that many people consider murder. He's one of them," spokesman Tony Snow said.

He means murder for the drug companies--many of which would go out of business if anything were actually "cured".

He is living in a fantacy world. Even if we do define abortion as murder, stem cell collection and research happens AFTER the murder has occured. No further harm nor any further "murder" is possible after someone has died.

Well... 67 is enough to overturn a veto. Let's see if the more sane among our government also have any balls.

America cannot afford to unilaterally surrender its leadership in this area of scientific discovery. Let ethicists ponder the ethical questions, I would like to see a compelling arguement that flushing unused IVF embryos down the toilet is somehow more ethical than harvesting them to save lives. Even if you are pro-life, you would value life enough to not waste it. Nobody likes car wrecks, but most people support harvesting of organs from donors to make the best of a bad situation.
That's first thing, and secondly if we don't do it, China and others will, and they will hold key intellectual property, instead of us. Do you think most Americans who can be saved or have their lives improved by embryonic stem cells will forgo treatment to satisfy the extreme right? Dream on. It's going to happen anyways, the only question is who will be running the show.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine have isolated a new source of adult stem cells that appear to have the potential to differentiate into several cell types. If their approach to growing these cells can be scaled up and proves to be safe and effective in animal and human studies, it could one day provide the tissue needed by an individual for treating a host of disorders, including peripheral nerve disease, Parkinson's disease, and spinal cord injury.
---
Overall, the researchers showed that human embryonic stem cell media could be used to isolate and expand a novel population of multipotent adult stem cells from human hair follicles. "Although we are just at the start of this research, our findings suggest that human hair follicles may provide an accessible, individualized source of stem cells," says Xu. The researchers are now working on inducing other cell types from the hair sphere cells and testing the cells in animal models. Study co-authors are Hong Yu, Suresh M. Kumar, and Geza Acs, all from Penn; and Dong Fang, Ling Li, Thiennga K. Nguyen, and Meenhard Herlyn, all from the Wistar Institute, Philadelphia.
Now using "human embryonic stem cell culture conditions," we can use adult stem cells to achieve the results we were looking for using embryonic stem cells and an ethical dilemma is avoided altogether.

The number was 63, not 67.

I'm glad to see him finally do this though, if by chance some Democrats come into Congress.

To put it in terms King George can understand, You're either for scientific research or you're against it.

not likely :adult stem cells that appear to have the potential to differentiate into several cell types

big difference between being able to change into all cell types (embryonic) and several cell types(adult stem)

So, you're predicting that these researchers are wrong when they predict that they will be able to coerce the stem cells to become other types of cells? Or you'd rather just throw money at embryonic stem cell research rather than pursue this?
