Bag of fresh ready to eat green beans = $3.79 200 calories

Wendy's Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger, 5 piece crispy chicken nuggets, small french fries and a small soda = $3.96 1310 calories (includes condiments)

Aren't each of those 99 cents each? How did you get $3.96?

Anyway, yes, it is ridiculous what the cost of healthy good food is compared to junk like that.

You can also buy big bags of rice, beans, and noodles and cook up some healthy food for cheaper than fast food.

I made a pasta w/ tuna that would feed about 12 people for around 25 dollars. It tasted good too.

25.00 = jr. bacon cheese burger and fries for 12.5 people. with zero prep time.

Maybe in gross dollars spent, but as a ratio of education spending/GNP, I'd be willing to bet that we are far from the top.

Also, as already stated, Rice and beans FTcheap!
There is a reason mexicans chose the ingredients they did.

Only 2 JBC each? In that case, with those small portions, my pasta could have served 20 people.

many would argue that white rice and pastas are just empty calories as well. and many poor family also tend to eat alot of both. whole wheat pastas and whole grain rices are more expensive. by like a factor of 2 or more.

I could probably make pasta and tuna for 12 people for 5 or 6 pounds, thats like 12 dollars. How much is a can of tuna?

That's not even relevant lol. The bottom line is we spend more money per child than anywhere in the world.

Do some research on Kansas City's public schools and what happened to them after spending billions of dollars to "make them better".

Meh. I think it mostly comes down to taste. You can buy white and wheat bread at pretty much the same price...I see many lower-class families that "hate white bread". In fact, growing up and seeing a lot of lower-class kids...they were VERY picky eaters...they refused to eat vegetables...only liked Top Ramen, Mac & Cheese, white bread, etc.

around a buck a can depending.

However as soon as you start throwing in a fresh/frozen vegetable your prices will sky rocket. And fresh fruits and veggies are the cornerstone of any well rounded menu no matter what nutritionist you talk to. they will all agree on that.

Not entierly. I am married to a teach and her mom is also a teacher. According to them there are 2 (edit) main(/edit) problems, the root of which is that parents don't care.

1. Teachers arn't allowed to discipline kids in any meaningful way.
2. Parents don't help their kids or ensure that they do their homework (due to #1, parents can't do this either).

When you couple this with teaching to the lowest common denominator...

The math isn't strong in this one.

.99 x 4 = $3.96

You know you can always get the Grande special at taco bell and get 10 bean buritos for $10, eat only 2 a day and have taco bell goodness for 5 days on $10.
2 of them with extra onions and red sauce and Im good with a 12 pack of generic diet from walmart for $2.

Dont know how many calories is in that but couldnt be much for its beans and a sprinkle of cheese (you know they dont put more then a few shreds in them) and onions are a free $ and calorie filler but man it tastes good.

I mention this because on my way home from wally world today I stoped at TB (been like 6 or more months) and got it so I can have a tasty lunch for the next couple days. And for thoes that dont know these things re-heated in the toaster oven for 20 min at 350 taste even better :D
Never the microwave for they get mushy, cold in the center and hot on the edges and just taste like puke, but in the toaster oven you good to go.

I don't wan't to dertail the thread, but your view that more money won't help our schools isn't necessarily true.

Here in TX we are losing more teachers than we can hire, mostly due to the low pay, and often the ones that stayare the less competent ones who are content with the pay.

My dad worked his way up to a position where he was working for the state, integrating computers and multimedia labs into elementary schools. He was very passionate about it, and the schools he worked in were ofen in very underprivledged areas, helping the kids who needed the skills the most.

Due to lack of funding his position was eliminated, and the State of FL was more than happy to hire him to do the same thing for their schools.

More money (manged properly) would definitely benefit our kids.

Americans have evolved into "Eat what is convenient" mentality. Fast food is constantly pushed upon us through advertisements, ads and with thousands of establishments throughout the U.S. It almost seems like you can't drive a couple of blocks without a fast food place in sight.

In addition, alot of Americans work constantly. Alot of households consist of a majority of family members working. This leaves little time or "want to" for making a home cooked meal. So, what better way to feed the family, than sending ole Pop down to McDonalds to pick up dinner for the night or grab the call-in order of two large pizzas from Pizza Hut.

In less developed countries the rich are fat and the poor are skinny.

Here the poor are fat and the rich are skinny.

I don't think money is making us fat.

True.. Fast food is cheap.. anything bad for consumption is cheap.

So, why are the "rich" skinny? More informed? Can afford healthier foods?
Have the ability to hire a chef? :p
