Why was the Beretta 92F pistol so overhyped by the media?

I really like this pistol back then and still do but just not as much. It's a good looking pistol but alittle under powered at 9mm. The design is showing its age too. If I was to get a pistol right now I'll probably look at a Sig .40 S&W P228 or HK .40 S&W USP.

i found the baretta 92f to be one of the smoothest, best balanced, accurate pistols i have ever fired. i liked the weight and size and how if felt to hold. it also did not have much kickback.

i carried the glock 27 or the glock 30 on a daily basis, but loved the baretta on the range.

sig in .40 is a P229
the P228 is 9mm only

p228
p229

the p228 is military/law enforcement only now.

dunno, maybe because its one of the most easily recognizable pistols out there? or another thought, is that there are so many made for military movies that they are just that readily available?

Actually, the reason you see so many Beretta 92F pistols in movies is because...

It is an easy gun to get to cycle with blanks. The 92 series has a different action that is easier to cycle with a reduced powder charge, than say a Glock or SIG. The beretta has a rotating barrel instead of a tilting barrel like many other semi-autos. Seems that I can't think of many movies that actually show a Glock cycling (with blanks) on the screen.

Yeah, its like 99% similar to the M9. Which I have on my hip right now as I type. This thing sucks. The military has cheap and crappy mags which FTF. My particular weapon right now is fairly accurate though. Almost as much as the Glock 19 at home.

My next handgun will either be a XD in 45 ACP (coming out soon), or a Kimber 1911, or a sig p229 in 40 s&w. Or a Taurus 8 shot revolver in .357 mag.

Or I'll just buy all of the above after my next deployment.

I wish my wife would carry. I'm not so concerned about myself, but shes more vunerable. She goes shooting at least monthly so she knows what shes doing.

its not hyped. when people see handguns in movies/tv they tend to look generic looking, unless they are drastically different like a semi vs revolver people don't notice. so meh

i whole heartedly agree...I go to the range about every other month or so (pretty much an amaetur, but I have taken a handgun safety class and want to get my CCL next year), but everytime I shoot with the beretta, everything is pretty much around dead center at 15 feet out...

pic...hint, it's not the one on the left

At the time when the 92F was in every movie it was on every headline. The US military was doing weapons tests to replace the old .45 caliber Colt model 1911 and the winner was the 92F. That caused a hell of a lot of controversy as the US was replacing a classic American gun with a newfangled unproven Italian gun. They were going to something less powerful and there were also some problems with the test Berettas slides cracking with heavy use. So there were hints and allegations that the tests were not on the up and up and that the 92F winning was not an honest outcome. It was big news at the time. The only guns a non gun afficianado would have heard about were the Beretta and the Dirty Harry Magnum. So that's what got used in movies, they were the most familiar to the average movie-goer.
