Umm explain to me the advantages of using SETI@home??
Why would I want to use a program the punishes my CPU non stop and will crank up my electricity bill cause Ill never turn the computer off?
I dont get it....
 
Umm To participate in the search for ET, however laughable or futile it may be, for the competition, for the way it causes you to tweak your machine in every way possible, to further the advancement of distributed computing efforts.

ummm... it doesn't punish your cpu, it simply keeps the pipelines full of info instead of junk data like the system idle process. unless you're running a software cooler or windows millenium, then your cpu is doing something all the time anyway. and you don't have to keep your comp on all day, though if you're not running an athlon or duron it probably takes less power than your average light bulb.
 
ok but is it seriously worth it?? Honestly do you think that using YOUR computer to do their work, and in a indirect way, pay for it, count for anything? I they did find alien life, governments would probably cover it up cause it could cause strange sh#t to happen here.. ie suicides, mass hysteria..u know all that weird cult type of sh#t that crazy people are in to... my 2cents though!!!
 
Yes, it's supposed to mean that the attutide of "I'm not going to find it individually, so why help the team-effort?" is not a very good one IMO.
 
Actually it would probably be beneficial to release the finding of alien life, and cause mass hysteria and suicides. It would probably benefit the world to get rid of anyone crazy enough to kill themselves just because we found alien life.
 
Well, personal preference would be the key reason to run SETI. Other than that you can use any of the following reasons:

- Use SETI as a way to tune every last drop of performance from you memory and CPU subsystems.

- For competition between others to see who can turn out the most work units.

- For the sake of finding something that would be extremely cool

- To give your PC something to do in its idle time.

Otherwise.....if your not interested in it.....don't bother. It's that simple.

people, if you are asking about it, then you should try it.

Helping Seti with crunching the massive amounts of data they get in from Aricebo isn't pointless. it helps them, doesn't really hurt u (unless u're CPU overheats) and shows support for scientific research all around. if you're one of those who don't give a sh!t about this, well nuts to u, instead go play with you're RC5.

Both are fun in that you can try to assimilate more computers, and tweak your existing ones..

BTW I agree with bigshooter. If that isn`t a great reason to do SETI, what else is? 😉
 
Three words: ALIENS and STATS! Team AnandTech SETI has more stats than you can shake a stick at! Check us out over in the Distributed Computing forum.
