Why use PDF?

Vectors!...have u seen a logo in pdf? enlarge it to 2000% and do that to a gif...see what happens.

You never know. I'm yet to figure out how your right hand was able to post to this forum by itself. Well I guess that's more possible.
Several people have already said it: PDF's always look exactly the same on every computer they are displayed on, and they can be displayed on pretty much any computer. If Adobe's viewer isn't available for your system of choice, xpdf or some other open source viewer probably is.
And don't get me started on the evils of Word documents. Aside from the fact that they can only be displayed on whatever systems M$ decides it gives a damn about (i.e. not Linux, BSD's other than darwin/ppc, BeOS, etc), they are dependant on the fonts and screen resolution of the system they are viewed on, and of course, M$ changes the format every other month so if you managed to hack together a viewer for your favorite platform, it's worthless before it ever gets put to work.
Anyone who sends me, or referrs me to a Word document agrees by doing so to be hung by their testicles with rusty fish hooks.

Yup. Although Word 97/2000/2002 .doc files are somewhat compatible, they are quite flaky.
Most employers I dealt with prefer .doc files, though. I've never heard of anyone asking for PDF. As much as I like PDF for what they are designed for, I am not going to buy Adobe Acrobat just to barely create one or two (or none) PDF files a month. I might if Adobe decides to offer a subscription service for Acrobat, though.

I might if Adobe decides to offer a subscription service for Acrobat, though. Actually, you don't need acrobat to make PDF files. I know that there are a number of free word processors that can save as PDF, among other formats. I'll post a link in a bit.

Well, i've been looking for free PDF generators for the last few minutes. They are plentiful for *NIX, but I'm finding it difficult to find any for 'doze. AbiWord might support PDF, I'm not sure.

Indeed, if you want full control over how it will look, and you want more and better suited functionality, you use Adobe Writer. Just like if you want to make a professional HTML page you don't use Frontpage.
