Why trust the words of man?

In any discussion of religion, many christians will quote the bible as a source of divine will and authority. But here's my question about the bible. How can people put so much faith in an ancient text that has been translated and revised so many times? I mean even jesus' own words have been reworded, edit, or eliminated from the bible.

I know how to think about things and empathize. these are the reasons i don't steal, lie, kill etc. If god has given me the power of reason and a concience, then why would i use the bible to form my opinions for me. especially when said text has been translated and manipulated by many people, organizations, and monarchies over the centuries.

Does it make more sense for god to use the language of man to communicate his intent, when that medium can be manipulated or abused, or for god to communicate on a higher more divine level?

P.S. i would prefer an intelligent discussion rather than a marshmallow roast, thanks.

No Christian will be able to give you a satisfactory answer to this. All they can muster is "just because".

Eh, you make it sound like the bible is held as a perfect book or something

I think it's the main ideas that the followers believe in

no it's seems more like people hold it as a perfect book when they find quotes to their liking. Like when it's against gay marriage.

but then i never hear anyone talk about jesus saying "And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for unchastity, and marries another, commits adultery" he also says that it is adultery to marry a woman that has been divorced... depending on what revision of the bible you're reading.

My own personal thoughts on this as a Christian:

Yes, you're right. The bible isn't directly the word of God in all aspects, but also it is. The reasoning for this is the fact that man is not infalable (sp?) and these are only the accounts of individuals during the time period (example: matthew, mark, luke, john, etc - although those are all new testament). On the other hand, the ideals is what is meant to be portrayed in portions of the bible.

Actually, if you want to read a really funny book, try Lamb by Christopher Moore. Kind of off-subject, but it's about Jesus life (fiction-wise) from about the age of 8 until 33 (the time period that he is not known in the bible practically).

It's really funny because it is written in first person aspect of someone that his best friend and travels with him in search of how to be a messiah and is HILARIOUS.

Anyways, do I believe the bible is exact? no. Do I believe that it is close? yes. It all comes down to faith in God, faith in man to record these items, and faith in man to express ideals in the christian point of view.

You're absolutely right about this as well. Many people take the book as a way to judge others and only look to it for comfort in times of need. This is not the way it was meant and hopefully those individuals learn that one day. Living a straight edged Christian life-style is impossible by default that Jesus was the only man that could walk without sin, however, the idea is that you do everything in your power to do so.

I'd give you the answer, but I won't have time to think up sarcastic answers to the resulting 102,000 begged questions. So just google it.

It's not like you're some super genius who is the first person to ever wonder this.

 thanks for the mature reply

unfortunately my faith in man is often pushed to the breaking point. Even the general ideals of christianity seem to be compromised by many when it is convinient.

you know some people (me) actually go back to the greek and hebrew to see what words mean in the original language. yes there are some different versions out there but most of them agree with each other.

Monkey,

I suggest you try researching a little bit at one of the sites I like. It's www.carm.org. It's a Christian Apologetics & Research Ministry site.

Start with the 40 Objections and then you can also read up on historical accounts of items that occur in the bible, etc...

no, thanks that was sarcastic enough, and it probably only took you a few minutes

thanks, i was really worried for a moment that i was just so smart i might have to making egotistical, supercilious posts. thanks for doing the work for me.

That shouldn't even matter. Even if it is or not, it's the core of the story that truly matters. Bible, Torah, Koran, Scriptures, etc...all these are the same ideas, virtues, and paths to living a full and wholesome life. People forget because they let their differences blind them.

You could not be any more right in what you just said. It is compromised by man on a minute-by-minute basis. This was expected and written about in the bible. Tehre are many individuals who will turn to god when they need something, but I gurantee you, even if you only go at those times, he will never say no in hopes that you will stay with it.

The bible really writes about God as a parent of man (just as he was the Father of Jesus). No matter what you do that is wrong, he still loves you and attempts to guide you. It's much like if your child only told you he loved you when he wanted a new toy. You (hopefully) would try to teach the child about love and show him the path rather than just say, you had your shot once and you blew it, sorry.

This isn't a Christian idiosyncrasy, it's a human one.
