Why The World Makes No Sense: Vol. I - Car Insurance

Kev

Lifer
CAR INSURANCE

I'm 20 and have never been in an accident in 4 years. My sister is 18 and has been in 1 accident. My other sister, who is 16, just got her liscence - she got into an accident literally 30 seconds after starting to drive a car; that is no exaggeration.

Anyway, defying all logic, when my 16 year old sister got her liscence, our insurance went down. I don't mean that the amount of insurance we each pay went down, I mean that the total insurance paid by everyone on our policy has gone down. You could say that we should pay HER for being on the policy.

Apparently having a 16 year old liablity on the policy is a great way to reduce your insurance rates. I'm not complaining here, it just makes no sense. And what makes less sense is that when I turn 21, and have even more driving experience, our rates will go up.

There has to be a group of retarded monkeys somewhere that makes up policies for companies.

just wait till you turn 25.
and get your own insurance.

i donno how your family's financial situation is like.

but say you got some money saved up for a rainy day...
and your sister gets into an accident (God forbid)...
then the other person can potentially sue you for your money...
if you guys are all under one insurance policy.

i guess you can say that this is another one of those things where insurance doesn't make sense.

as far as i can see it appears as if a multi-person discount offset the new rate.

for the same reason being if you have 2 cars and 2 drivers. you sell car #2 and notify insurance to cancel your policy, they hike your rate on car #1 to make up for the loss of premiums and discounts.

1. multiple car discount, good student discount, etc.

2. 21 year olds have a tendancy to drink and drive.

Insurance... haha. Don't get me started.

I'm currently paying 2500 a year for insurance on my vehicle, a 2000 blazer.

I haven't had a ticket since I was 16 (i'm now 20, so that ticket is no longer on my record) and I haven't ever had an accident.

Talk about getting bent over... heh.

You should shop around for a better rate. Try taking higher deductables.

Anyway, I just bought my first insurance policy separate of my family's policy. My car is now in my name, as is the insurance, so if I get in an accident, the victims can't go after my folks. Its a good move. BTW, the reason the rates are all screwy is because of 1- multiperson, multicar discounts and 2- statistics.

The sad thing is I have shopped around ( I got 4 or 5 qoutes, all in the same ballpark ). My deductable is at $500. Bumping it to $1000 would save me like 200/year, not hardly worth it.
