Why the price jump in 512MB DDR DIMMs?

I noticed there is roughly about a $50 price jump on PC2100 (even PC1600) DDR DIMMs 512MB in size. Pricing on most every other module size is roughly the same. Does anyone know exactly why this happened? Even 512MB PC133 ram prices stayed the same, just the DDR experienced a price jump.

because 256Mbit sdram chips are mature, main stream, in mass production.
256Mbit ddr sdram chips are quite new.

I already understood that. I guess that I really was just wondering if there happened to be a fairly specific event that occured to force the price up rather suddenly. It wasn't too long ago that I could have paid $100 and am now looking at $150 for the same part. I guess I'll just have to wait for prices to fall...

crucial's prices have gone up $5 in the past week or so for 256mb ddr sticks.. :( Why couldn't this happen AFTER I buy mine?

Supply & demand could be another reason to this. Baic economic fundamentals.

Because the yield on the density level of the chips used to make 512MB DIMMs is not as high as those used in 256MB and smaller DIMMs.

Once the yields increase, the price will decrease.

Supply and Demand? Everything I've come accross says Demand is WAY down on everything computer related, haven't you seen how many tech professionals are being laid off?

considering 512 modules were selling for mega hundreds not all that long ago, even when the prices off 256meg and below modules where reaching these incredible lows, it is completely understandable.

look at the 512 prices for the vendors on pricewatch that haven't updated in awhile, the ones at the end of the list, makes for good reading.

sales are down, and prices will drop again, hopefully.

i feel memory is inflated as far as price goes anyway, hell, we are talking a rather small PCB, all made to industry standards, then the manu/assemblers install the chips.

a lot less goes into a memory module than building a motherboard or CPU, just for an example, so, my take is that for years they have been RIPPING us off!!!
