ive been wondering... why does anandtech use a filter that wont allow words....

i see a lot of people doing it anyway... we just write fuk or sh!t instead...
also the filter has no problem with douchebag which im shure is considered offensive by someone...

is anyone really offended by the real words... and if not why is the censoring in place...

I agree with you, but my guess is that if you didn't have rules, it would get out of hand. They also might then get censored by those crappy internet supplements for parenting, or have to have some disclaimer to access the forums.

My guess...might have something to do with legal reasons. This is not an age restricted forum and like TV there may be issues with language. On TV you have to edit the sound but you can still see their mouth make the word.

Personally people should have enough courtesy to edit themselves. Using even the edited words give a post less credit. It's not the only way to make a point.

This from the man who's sig glorifies getting drunk (not that I have a problem with that). Anyways, they're just words. In bizarro world hello is a swear word and sh|t is a compliment....they don't really mean that much unless you let yourself be offended by it.

Certain words are obvious, and others are banned for a reason. The Mods don't have time to crack down on everyone bypassing the word filter. For that matter, it seems like they really don't care as long as it doesn't get out of hand or abusive. It gives then an excuse to hand out vacations when they are deserved.

As for going back and finding the word, there used to be a feature that highlighted it for you. I hope we get it back eventually.

I think it's more of an issue with advertisers. Certain advertisers won't want to be associated with a site with inappropriate language.
