Why the lack of RPGs on PS3?

I have been patient waiting for some good RPGs to come out thinking they take longer to develop. Well I looked through the release dates of a lot of PS2 RPGs and the upcoming release dates of PS3 ones and it looks like the PS2 will have had WAY more released in it's first 2 years than the PS3. This was always Sony's strong point...

PS3

Already out:

Enchanted Arms - Horrible game.
Oblivion - Already out on PC and Xbox360.

Games that will be released by the end of 2008 (hopefully).

Two Worlds - Already on 360 and PC and got pretty bad reviews.
Fallout 3 - Actually looks good and I will probably buy this game but for my PC.
Free Realms - Online RPG. Not my thing.
DC Universe - See above.

Valkyria Chronicles &
Rise of the Argonauts - A couple of action RPGs that look promising.

So there's an overview of the RPGs for the PS3 in it's first two years. Lets compare that to the PS2 in it's first two years.

Final Fantasy X
Jade Cocoon 2
Suikoden III
Wild ARMs 3
Summoner

That's not even HALF of them and we're already looking at a better selection. Much better.

So can anyone tell me........

What gives?

Maybe everyone scared to make on because FFXIII is going to be so badass it's not even funny.

The Valkyria Games are good though. You might as well give the PS2 version a play through, or if you've got a PSP, the one for that. They are pretty different, some might say the story is a bit boring, but meh.

Depending on your PS3 model, you have a huge library of RPGs to play from the PS2.

You really didn't have an original, exclusive 360 RPG to speak of until Blue Dragon late last year. That was 2 years into the 360's life. Give it some time, when the RPGs start rolling in on the PS3, they're going to be epic.

Jrpg's always come in later than other types of games. Localization takes more time.

This was the same for ps2 as well.

to me it seems like the current trend for game companies is to put more focus on MMORPGs than Traditional ones as MMOs are the current "it" thing.

They're RPGs, most of them they can easily do it for PS2 for a lower budget and a wider audience.

Are there any dates yet for the PS3 Trusty Bell / Enternal Sonata? Reviews were mixed for the 360 version but it looked like it was worth renting.

PS2 jRPGs will keep me busy for a long, long time though (any many are $15-20) so lack of native PS3 ones isn't hurting me.

Persona 3 FES (PS2) will be out soon for $30 which is nice since it includes the original Persona 3 that I was too cheap to buy at $50

Looking forward to that; I can finally play it since I have a 60gb PS3.

Eternal Sonata comes out this month in Japan, IIRC.

I think it's just because the PS consoles have predominantly been JRPG-oriented, but there aren't as many Jp studios to invest the time into a next-gen RPG.

Valkyria Chronicles is a new IP. You're thinking of Valkyrie Profile.

I rented folklore and found it to be mildly amusing, but it was heavy on the combat and ultra light on dialog choices, most of it was basically "click next" with no choices, select combat powers, hit buttons and suck up glowing objects.

I would love to see some RPGs along the lines of Baldurs Gate 2: Shadows of Amn / Throne of Bhaal, and PlaneScape Torment for the PS3. But, many "RPGs" (not just on the PS3, speaking in general) seem to be third person shooters with character customization (gear and stats) and neglected dialog interaction / story / character development these days.

Are any of those games that you guys mentioned that are coming out this year (or are already out) similar to PlaneScape Torment? (in regard to the level of character development, good story, and interactive dialog (not just "click next"))

Folklore wasn't categorized as an RPG.

It's the closest thing to an RPG I could find for the PS3, which is disappointing.
