Why the hatred for Jose Canseco?

I was reading an article today on the latest Hall of Fame inductees and saw that Jose Canseco only got like 2 votes out of 450 something ballots, which means that he is never eligible again to run for the HoF. While Mark McGwire didn't get inducted, he still garnered enough votes so that he can run for like the next 15 years.

But I thought Jose Canseco was pretty good, so why so much hatred? Is he just not good enough to be in the HoF or is it solely because of the steroid issue? If it's because of the steroids, then why did McGwire get so many votes?

Mcguire had a better overall career/numbers, but Jose in his best years might've been better until he got too juiced up that he always got injured and lost his speed. And also he is basically a pariah since he was one of the first to admit to it to sell his book.

Jose Canseco was one of my favorite ball players when I was little. Right after Ricky Henderson (loved them A's, mostly just for Ricky... so much that I'd root for them against my home team the Mariners) and Nolan Ryan (the guy is a legend).

I just can't believe that him snitching would have this sort of affect. I mean this is pretty official business here...we aren't dealing with 5 year olds. If somebody is doing something wrong, then I don't get why it's so bad for somebody else to say something about it.

I loved the latter two as well!

Let's not paint Jose with a halo now...He snitched/admitted to it because he's basically poor (see the stunt where he played a few days for that minor league team in the last couple of yeras), and this was how he could sell his book.

No, but it's pretty low to take other's down alongside you when you can't even take responsibility for your own actions.

On another note, I can't wait 10-15 years to see if Barry Bonds even makes it :)

Canseco can still get into the Hall, but he never will. He's also an admitted steroid abuser who snitched on his fellow players. That never goes over well, no matter the sport. However, steroids and baseball just don't mix.

If it were the NFL, though, then you'd only get a 4 game suspension and still play in the Pro Bowl.

i would imagine it would hard to get into the HOF if your most memorable play was trying to catch a ball near the wall and have it bounce of your head to give the other team a home run...that was classic...

maybe that is what came to mind when the voters were casting their ballots...

Or hurting your arm after you try pitching a few games later.

Well also IIRC Canseco took steroids after they had been banned as an illegal substance. McGwire, while his trial was pitiful to say the least, took a legal substance at the time. After they became illegal he was no longer on them.

I think they both made extremely poor choices, but to lump McGwire (A class act on and off the field in most cases) with Canseco isn't fair at all.

If it were the NFL, though, then you'd only get a 4 game suspension and still play in the Pro Bowl.

I hate Shawn Merriman....I really do.

If I were a coach or owner of a Pro-Sports team there would be none of this crap. The minute you get arrested for DUI or any felony you are off the team regardless of talent. The minute you are found using Performance Enhancing Drugs, you are off the team. I don't deal with this crap...

Canseco only played 5, maybe 6, full seasons in his career, he was always hurt or nursing an injury. He was a poor defensive player. He played in an era of high run scoring and home runs, judging him in that context he's an extremely marginal HOF candidate at best. Add in his claims of being the pre-eminent steroid guru and the pioneer who brought it into baseball, his "snitching" on the brotherhood, and all the sideshow events that happened with him on and off the field, and he has NO chance.

They didn't vote against them, per se, they either left them off of the ballot or simply turned in blank ballots.

The reasoning for leaving players off of the ballot is that since no one in the history of the MLB Hall of Fame has ever gotten 100% of the vote, why should anyone ever? If Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Willie Mays, etc. didn't get 100%, why should Gwynn or Ripken? Hell, it took Joe DiMaggio until his THIRD year of eligibility to get elected. How f'ed is that?

The Hall isn't as sacred as it really should be.

HoF voters IMO view themselves as the gatekeepers to some kind of elite baseball priesthood. They take themselves way too seriously. Concepts like redemption and contriteness have never mattered an ounce to these guys. If I'm wrong on this point it out - I can take it.

Interesting how MLB doesn't have a problem getting Pete Rose to show up at galas to promote the game. Standard hypocritical bullsh!t if you ask me.

His actual baseball resume is not bad at all.
- Rookie of the Year
- MVP
- First and only among four to reach 40/40
- Two rings?

But he did not reach the coveted 500 hr mark and he was filled with so much controversy outside of baseball that included Madonna to beating his wife and steroids that it really affected his reputation. But I will say this. I have never seen such a MONSTEROUS swing by any baseball player ever.

He broke the cardinal rule by confessing to using steroids, he should have played dumb like McGwire.

Actually, I bet of Mark McGwire would have come forward and said something like:

"Yep, I did it. I blame no one but myself. Steroids were NOT illegal when I did them, so I choose to inject them into my body. I regret that decision now and will live with the consequences. I am truly sorry for endangering myself and for tainting the great game of baseball."

he would either be in the Hall right now, or would be a cinch for next year. I just don't get why they don't admit their guilt and act like they're really sorry. If Pete Rose does this back in 1989, he would be in the Hall right now, working in baseball at some capacity.
