Why the fuss over RU486 when there is the ECP?

Why is there a fuss over the abortion pill when the Emergency Contraceptive Pill (simply a high dose of the birth control pill) can be taken up to 72 hours after unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy in the first place (either by keeping a fertalized egg from attaching to the uterus, or by preventing ovulation)?

In fact, why do any females have abortions without first attempting the use of Emergency Contraceptive Pills? It boggles the mind really...

Because in the US, they are not readily available in all places.

It's just the normal pill except in a bigger dosage though? Or is that people/doctors don't know about it that much?

i think the reason some people have problems with ru486 is that it prevents implantation of the morula on the utereous. in this case, conception has already occurred whereas "the pill" prevents conception from happening in the first place.

I'm sure RU486 costs an arm in the leg compared to ECP because ECP is just the normal pill, so economies of scale would make ECP really cheap. I wouldn't have known about ECP if it weren't for the government plastering transit buses with advertisements about them. I can't see ECP costing more than $10 though...although you'd have to see a doctor...in Canada that's free, not the case in the U.S. so maybe that's why? How much would it cost to visit your doctor in the U.S. for this?

I believe part of it is also the terms for it. People will have a bigger negative reaction to an "abortion pill" than they will to an "emergency contraceptive pill".

Hmmm, they just said on the news that that pill won't be available in Iowa for at least another month. Wonder when it will be available in other places.
