I go to Illinois State, too -- I'm assuming that's where you're from hence the Bloomington-Normal skit. :) There's only Red Lobsters around here, which is why the gf and I went to Joe's.

i really have no idea where you guys are. But have you tried Bob Chins?

Joe's Crab Shack is not seafood.

It's the only good seafood place in the area, and we had to drive 35 miles to get there. But I agree, it isn't seafood ... or if it is, it was terrible. I don't think Red Lobster counts as a seafood place, either. I guess that's what we get for living about as far as possible from two coasts.

Red Lobster is actually a lot better than Joe's Crabshack---they're basically like a "Hooters" with seafood instead of wings.

On another note, you left a 25% tip??? Man, that was some waitress!

I've lived in MD all my life, and I SUCK at taking crabs apart. Too much work, too little reward. I always cut the sh*t outta myself on the shells, and when the wounds get some Bay seasoning packed in there - YEOWW!!

THere's an art to it. I like snow crab best myself. I can go through about 3 pounds in 10 minutes :) All-You-Can-Eat places in Mertyl Beach hate me heheheh

Bob Chin's is in my hometown - it was a five minute walk from where I lived!

But alas, no.

Joe's Crab Shack? Red Lobster?

BLEH! It's tolerable, but I feel sorry for people who actually believe that those places serve good seafood (I work with some of them).

Bob Chinn's in Wheeling IL is the BEST! Chinn's Fishery in Downers Grove (I think) is good too. Unfortunately, Bob Chinn's in downtown Chicago is not so great.

Seafood poisoning. That's a good one. It's called "Food Poisoning" and you can get it from ANY meat and a whole lot of other stuff, too.

Interestingly, seafood used to be cheap centuries ago. It was considered the meat for poor people. The reason it's expensive now is simply because of supply and demand. With populations much higher but ocean prolificness actually down, seafood has become expensive.

Just took my gf out last night to city crab. Total bill came to $167 for the two of us. Seafood is expensive, but it's far more exciting than 'land' food.

I agree.
When I was younger, I used to love the hard shell crabs.
I bought some the other day and I didn't realize how much work so so litttle meat.
Now if it was all you can eat, I can definately enjoy these hard shell crabs more but when you're eating at home you need to get all the meats you can :)

The Alaskan king crabs is the pinnacle of crabs. They're at least $13/lbs++ around here.
A very underrated carb is the dungeonus(sp) crabs. The legs/claws have just as much meat as the snow crabs and cost about the same.

Yep. Like I said, my parents' place is a five minute walk from there, and every day at around dinnertime, I'd see this ridiculous line around the damn place . . . no kidding!

I haven't gone to a seafood place before. I know, I had a sheltered childhood in that respect. I regretfully told the gf I wanted to take her there (Joe's Crab Shack in Peoria, IL) a few days ago ... I changed my mind later that day and said I didn't feel like it (which means I realized it would be an easy ~$60-80 for just the two of us and was trying to get out of it even though I knew it wouldn't work).

She got the King Crab, which was something like $25 and I got a Sirloin / Lobster combo which was $20. Plus drinks and other stuff she wanted to get it came to about $60, not to mention the $15 tip. Ouuchh. Dinner at a good steakhouse normally costs a little over half that.

So yeah. There isn't exactly much meat in crab legs anyway. So what the hell is the big deal about seafood? I haven't been missing anything, and the lobster I had tasted like crap -- the gf says it normally tastes better, but I see it as $60 wasted.

Cliff notes: Seafood is overrated. Eating out is overrated. Girls like to do it way too much. Avoid doing it at all costs (if you're a poor college student like me), and never, never say you want to take them to some uber expensive seafood place unless it's their birthday or something.

Just buy some live lobsters and crabs, boil them in a pot and you will understand.

I love shellfish. Everything else tastes like garbage in comparison.

:Q

Good gods man, WHAT is your definition of a 'good steakhouse'!?!? Hell, Outback costs as much as your dinner already, and that's FAR from what I'd call a 'good steakhouse'!

Seafood is not inherently more expensive than anything else - for a 'good' (IE., romantic) dinner for 2, expect to pay over $100 for food and drinks, not including tip. Of course, ALSO expect to spend about 3 hours there, or you ARE just wasting your money. No, really. Appetizers, spending time to enjoy the main course and make conversation over a bottle of wine. Sipping coffees over desert and chatting. Yeah, 3 hours and $100 easy or it doesn't count.

As to the 'seafood' topic...mmmm....I LOVE seafood. Not a big fan of fish, though. Tuna is okay, but the rest of it...meh. Gimme mussels and lobsters and prawns and calamari and scallops and....

(Oh, yeah, crabmeat is pretty sparse. Especially in the legs. If they give you the whole crab, you'll do alright, but, really, lobster is the way to go. MUCH more meat in those guys. And VERY tasty if done right. And mussels are just good whenever.)

good crab/lobster at a chinese restaurant is also good:) the larger ones even have live tanks full of either. fresher the better!

i'm sure lobster and crab would be a lot less if it could be farmed. but it isn't to my knowledge.

The only reason they charge us so much for seafood is they can. Go to Malaysia. You'd be eating sushi for a week for the $20 it costs for a plate of it here.

If you love seafood and are a cheapskate, go fishing. Crabbing is nice too... on a pier, that is.

Mmm... crab.... dang it, too much shell and not enough meat. Maybe the friendly folks at Monsanto can figure out to grow us some crabs without those pesky shells. MMM.... GMO with a side of melted butter!

Our favorite local sushi place ("Yoko's", if you are ever in Bend, OR) sells a place for as low as $1.75. Granted, that's veggie 'sushi'. Seafood sushi plates run $2.75 (most of them) to $5.25 (for some REALLY nice stuff!).
