AMD 761 reminds me of the good ole' BX chipset. Fast, incredibly stable and mucho compatible. Makes computing be what is is supposed to be, FUN.
You can pull parts out and change them around all day long, and they just work. While not the fastest or best at benchmarks, you can still slap a big hairy video card in there with a highly overclocked cpu and rip out big gaming framerates with the best of them. I actually got rid of my KT266A and SiS 745 boards and went back to the 761 chipset, and never regretted it.

Its not just the bechmarks that determin how fast a system is. The way it feels opening and closing windows, having multiple programs running at the same time. THe AMD blows for anything other than gaming ang general office stuff. I have tested both side by side. Benchmarks are about the same yet the P4 will unpack, pack rar files, video encoding etc. in half the time it take my amd based system. And yes with everything the same except for MB/CPU. Just my $.02 worth.🙂😉

If you were comparing two systems of equal speed in benchmarks there is no way the P4 should have been "twice as fast". I don't have a P4 system, so maybe more people can jump in with an opinion. But my understanding is the P4 is definately the fastest cpu out there in the top end. But when you compare a PR rated AMD to the same MHz rated P4, they pretty well split the benchmarks. I have seen quite a few posters comment that the Athlon felt snappier in most Windows applications, even when falling behind in the benchmarks. Again, I don't have both side by side, but maybe someone who does can add their knowledge on the subject.

Well as I stated in my original post I tested both side by side. I have built computers since way back and always had a hard time with the AMD chips in the early 90's then in 00' I decided to take a chance and I bought an Athon and had been using one till about a couple of months ago. Then I had the opertunity to get a P4. My two kids have XP1800's that will both be replaced at Christmas. So all I can say is I am very happy. On my next upgrade I will not even consider going back to AMD. It was truely a joy to format and install XP on the P4 but a nightmare with the Athlon based CPU's and VIA chipsets MB's. Just look around at all of the different forums and you will find a majority of the problems are on AMD based systems, especialy with the VIA chipset.

I hear you about Via chipsets, while they have improved it can still take alot of work to get everything working right, sometimes it doesn't work.
Maybe you can try a good 761 board. Computergeeks.com has a brand spanking new Abit KG7 Raid for $47. Overclocking galore, you could sell the Via boards and come close to breaking even. Could be a very cheap option compared to a P4 solution. Thinking all that money you saved could go a long way to upgrading some video cards.

I don't know that its the best chipset ever, but I'd definitely say that its the best AMD chipset, by far. Here are some of the reasons:

I was being sarcastic towards him since his post was so informative and unbiased. It is a great chipset for AMD CPU's, but when people make claims like that they should give good reasons why they think so, instead of "Intel sucks, AMD rules" crap.

Anyways I am still a little partial towards the AMD761 chipset. That was a great chipest. Stable and fast 🙂

Yes, it was a great chipset. I still want to try out a 760MPX myself! 😀😀😀

Yep, I love the 761 too. Running a KG7 here, one of the finest boards I have ever owned. So stable, never complains, overclocks like a b!tch too. Posts my AXIA @ 1.6Ghz (1Ghz model) and runs all day @ 1.54.

Here's to the 761!
