Why so many iPod haters?

I think its a little too expensive. I got a Dell DJ 15gb for way less than the ipod equivalent about 1.5 years ago. Even though the ipod has more stuff and is smaller, the dell does the job that I want it to do and thats fine by me.

I'm sorry but iPods have their own DRM independent of iTunes, and this thread is about iPods.

I hate iPods because there are plenty of other options, a few of which are just as good, but owners of iPods rarely even look at the market options available to them before taking the iPod plunge.

Well, I can't say I bought my iPod because anyone else I know had it, I was the first person here to get one. I was close to hitting "Buy" on an iRiver H120, but the iPod was ALOT thinner, and a 6 dB difference in SNR didn't seem much to me (don't quote me off the numbers, its been a year). And to the guy complaining about the stock buds being sh!t, the ONLY daps I've seen with decent buds were Rio's, AFAIK they came with Sennheiser MX400s. I never even opened the iPod buds, pluuged my Fontopias (MDR-EX51LP) right in, and now I'm happily paired up with the Shure E2C, planning on selling them to a friend to get the E3C.

Dude, Archos devices are big, and low quality.

Archos devices come in all sizes many of them lots smaller than iPods, I've never had one break, every one I've seen has been of excellent quality, and they can do everything an iPod can do and lots more. All for far a lot less money.

Please tell me dear sir, which ass of yours do you speak from? The iPod has NO INDEPENDENT DRM OF ITS OWN. Not being able to copy songs back from it using iTunes is NOT DRM, its a purposely imposed limitation of iTunes. Open up your mounted iPod in My Computer, hit search, "Music, Video, and Pictures", hit advanced, then type in whatever it is you're looking for under "A word of phrase in the file". It'll find whatever song it is you're looking for by means of its ID3 tag, ON THE iPod, and you're free to do whatever you want with it. The only DRM you'll ever encounter using an iPod (or iTunes) is that on iTMS AAC files, and, well, lets just say that is easily taken care of Google is your friend.
