IMO the iPhone is an amazing multimedia device and decent smart phone. However, you want reasons to NOT get one. We've got about a dozen in use where I work and here's the complaints we get...

1. The keyboard is difficult to type on compared to a BB or Treo
2. Battery life (3G)
3. Dropped calls (3G)
4. Poor reception
5. Variety of issues requiring frequent reboots
6. Calender and tasks don't sync (when used with Exchange)

I'm still holding out for turn-by-turn navigation on the iPhone. Once they release a TomTom turn-by-turn GPS app (with complete and accurate maps from Tele Atlas), the iPhone will be the ultimate device for me.

Alright alright, there are some negatives to the phone that should be pointed out.

Cons:

Safari - It really is the best mobile browser I've used. However, the damn thing crashes way too regularly. This has been a problem since the 2G iPhone and has yet to be fixed. It can be quite annoying if you're in the middle of loading something important on the internet.

AT&T - Prohibitive cost, and subpar 3G Coverage. They show me in a dense area for 3G coverage, but I experience dropped calls at least 2-3X per day. It's improved since launch believe it or not, but still pretty unacceptable.

Plastic backing - Feels nice, but not nearly as durable as the old aluminum back. Make sure you use a case or best skin ever because it doesn't take much to nick it up. The glass is hard as hell to scratch though, so haven't had many problems there.

One thing I'd really like to see in future revisions is a user replaceable battery option. The stock one just does not cut it.

I am disappointed that there is not a way to use iTunes (or some other computer-based way) to organize the app pages on the iPhone. I have nine pages of apps and I could really use some organizational help!

Yeah, Safari crashes on my 2G/original iPhone a fair bit - particularly on websites with a lot of photos. Like http://icanhascheezburger.com/ among many others. But sometimes, it will just crash for no apparent reason.

So while we are on the cons:

No cut-n-paste. This is just an annoyance that they should be able to fix and I don't understand why they don't. It would be handy to be able to email links to things without having to write them down and then type them in.

No turn-by-turn GPS. Another software issue that I can't figure out.

No removeable memory cards - it's Apple, I should expect it, but I don't have to like it.

No removeable battery. This will be a real issue in a couple of years when all the iPhone owners have to get their lithium-polymer batteries replaced. And replacing it yourself on the 2G phones requires a soldering iron.

The camera is only marginal - it's not horrible for a cell phone camera, but the photos that iPhones take are not good enough to allow me to leave my real camera at home. No autofocus, no flash, not very high megapixel count, not very good at taking pictures in dark locations.

No bluetooth or WiFi sync'ing - some 3rd party apps help with the WiFi part, but I still haven't found a way to just have my phone auto-negotiate and sync wirelessly with my laptop when they are nearby.

No stereo bluetooth

Needs iTunes to sync and only sync's with one computer at a time - so if you have a work computer that's Linux, or that you can't run iTunes on (for security reasons for example)

Security is not good enough for most corporations to certify for internal use. I know a lot of major companies who don't think the iPhone is secure enough to be used for internal communication

And then, it has no keyboard, no MMS support, can't edit MS Office apps (only view), and isn't unlocked.

Am I the only one who thinks this is a terrible thread?

I mean, a similar thread for BlackBerries, HTC smartphones, etc. would have the exact same response. It's too easy to focus only on even a good product's cons while ignoring all the pros.

I don't think anyone would deny that the iPhone has issues but this is just a shitfest.

Holy Crap I didn't think this thread would get this long.
back in like page one of the thread someone said that sending text messages with pictures is not MMS, but online it says that it is.

So can you send a text message to someone with a picture in it and can you receive text messages with pictures?

Multimedia Messaging Service, MMS for short, is a cellular telephone standard for sending messages that include multimedia objects (images, audio, video, rich text). MMS is an extension of the SMS standard, allowing longer message lengths and using WAP to display the content. Its most popular use is sending photographs from camera-equipped handsets,

Because it's $300(for the good version) and we are in a down economy! WHO KNOWS WTF IS GOING TO HAPPEN BY SEPTEMBER '09, AT&T MIGHT EXPLODE ON YOU... Seriously, just don't be a drone and get an iPhone... not worth the money.

It starts at $199 not $299.

I said for the good version... No one gets the 8GB version, that's lame. 16GB all the way if you're getting an iPhone. White back too, just to say, "Yeah, I got the 16GB bitch"

Also the iPhone plans require $80 a month, you can't get an iPhone plan any cheaper.

You are one of the lamest people I have ever not met. Go back to your moms basement

For what it's worth, I can erase one "con" from my list. Safari doesn't crash much any more with the 2.2 patch. No more problems with icanhascheezburger.com, or anywhere else that I've seen. Since the 2.2 patch, I've had no more Safari crashes at all.

Because you have to pay $80/month for service.

Yup. Unless you need all the services, it's a lot to pay every month.

To be fair, the price is no different than any other voice + data plan from the other providers

Are you insane? I have voice+data from Sprint and it is no where near $80/month.

sigh

I shouldn't be doing this but...

Sprint: Everything Data: 70 bucks/month, unlimited data + 450min
VZW: PDA/Smartphone Nationwide Email: Monthly access starting at $79.99
TM: Internet: 40, Voice, starts at 30 = 70

ATT: Data + 450 = 70 bucks

Thanks for playing.

(SERO doesn't count, thanks)

OWNED. add to that the garbage customer service that sprint has. I wouldn't wish a phone call to Sprint customer service on my worst enemy.

where did you get $40/month for Tmobile internet? 3G speed internet is $20/month.

compare apples to apples..

sprint 450 minutes=$40 plus $15 for data = $55

everything plans include other stuff like tv premium, gps navigator.

I've gotten good customer service and tech support from sprint, and horrible att customer service, for what it's worth.

Every time there's a discussion of the iPhone, someone posts that page and I always follow the link like a lemming and then am left feeling like I've been rickrolled or something. :)

While we are comparing, apples to <cough> Apples.... it's the same thing at T-Mobile. At T-Mobile, select the individual 300 minute voice plan for $29.99 (300 minutes, unlimited night and weekend). Then pick a phone with a web browser, say the Samsung Behond, and then choose the unlimited 3G/EDGE data plan with 300 SMS messages for $24.99. So, $30 + $25 = $55. Same thing. I'm not sure how NS1 came up with $70.

You must be the only sprint customer getting good service then, because they lost over 1 million customers yet again last quarter. I believe that's the third in a row where 1 million or more kissed them goodbye, and went elsewhere. AT&T gained over 1 million new subs during the same quarter. Coincidence?:p
