Why shouldn't I buy a Acura CL 3.0 premium coupe?

Well, as the title suggests...are there any compelling reasons not to purchase this car at a reasonable price?

edit:
The model year is 1997

Cause the transmission might break. This auto trannies on current generation CLs are known to die for no reason. It's a relatively small problem, affects a small minority of users, but once you get the problem, it sucks. Some people have gone through 3+ trannies. I don't know if the issue was ever resolved. You should do a search on google for acura CL forums and do your own research.

"reasonable" is approximately at dealer trade in value according to edmunds.com. Interesting to hear about the transmissions though...definitely worth checking out as this could be a pricey problem.

Thanks,

Keep the opinions coming

Huh? I am pretty sure that I stated the car that I had in mind. Also, please feel free to share whatever opinion you like. That is what the internet is for...

every car has a reason to be bought, that's why it's on the market.

Ask yourself, what are you looking for in a car? If it matches it, that's enough reason to get it.

and any reason you shouldn't? I read here and there that Acura's styling's boring, but most of us like that right?

Whoops...Thought that I had mentioned the year, which would then imply an approximate dollar amount. Anywho, it is a 1997 and probably between 5500 and 6000.

Yeah...I think all of the above are met. I actually find the style kind of nice in a classic style sort of way. I'm most interested in finding out if anyone is aware of particular pitfalls for this model year( i.e. the tranny problem mentioned above). My primary concern is reliability with reasonable fuel efficiency.

A girl at work has a '97 3.0CL. Nice car...my Corolla takes it off the line, but once we're moving (40mph-ish), she cruises on by.

It's FWD, though. 🙁

If it is in good condition, and you have verified that it has a clear history, there is no reason why you shouldn't buy it. (assuming of course, that YOU like the car).

You know, I never really understood why people dislike FWD so much. I have driven RWD and FWD and the only advantage I can think of for the RWD is that you can do donuts in forward instead of reverse. Otherwise, for normal driving FWD handles so much better in poor driving conditions. Just my 0.02.

WTF? The only CL I have ever been in was a lot faster than it looked ... and no way a Corolla could take it.

In poor conditions, its true that FWD handles in a much more predictable manner. RWD is something that is more apparent in track conditions and near-limit handling, but can be somewhat more difficult in poor weather conditions.

I have a lightly modded 5sp (intake/catback/muffler/suspension). She has an auto (intake/exhaust). As I said, off the line..but once we were moving, no contest. I'm not the world's best manual tranny driver, but I'm not the worst either. I don't think she torque-braked either..

Edit: I almost 60-footed an SRT4 -- and my tires suck. The driver had a terrible run, though..but still, I'm proud of that. 😛

If she launched better, I probably would get blown away..but I didn't. Just my $0.02..not dissing the 3.0 or anything -- that's just my experience with it.

Who cares about poor weather conditions? Just drive more carefully when it's raining/

Well you have manual and she is auto. Unless her car is a nice sports car with auto it will suck compared to a manual as you can sure as hell throttle the crap out of it and drive it hard 😀. I know I can if I wanted too. Bro took the car in 1st to 50mph once :Q. Don't buy cars off young guys that look like boy race wannabes! I have no choice and got to share the car.

I have over 130k on my car..I'm nice to it sometimes. 🙂
What can you take first to 50mph in!? I'm just around 6000rpm at 35mph..and I redline somewhere around 6 - 6.2k (no stock tach, but I do have a rev limiter that I manage to avoid hitting..).

Edit: just to clarify, I was replying to this :

Dude, he'd looking at the previous gen CL - which has a totally different transmission.
