I wonder if this has already been asked 1000 times 😉

I am running 98 SE right now....going to build a fast machine...and i am wondering if/why i should change to XP ?

Why ? What's the features XP has which i dont have in 98SE ?

I use my (home) pc mainly for surfing....games....listening to mp3s...the usual stuff...so whats the big deal with XP ?

BSOD is a thing of the past! PLus you could run it all the time and never reboot(well, every few days I still think W2K has better uptime on my machine). Plus the BIG GREEN START BUTTON! That's all you need!

To update or to wait the age old question that is always asked everytime a new OS ships.
My opinionated answer is not if you update but when, of course you should update, every new os (except winblows ME) is an improvement on the last with better stability and updated features. Even though there are still people out there that think DOS is still King it has limits which thr newer OS's have invaded and optimized on. So my answer is to wait until the first round of patches (i beleive the first major patch file is already in the making) is released then cross your fingers and update. The sooner you get comfy with the new OS the sooner you can learn how to utilize its enhances capabilities. Of course this all in my opinion so don't get mad if you disagree with me, i have been wrong before.

The stability should come with an asterisk "unless you're primarily a game player". 98 still has xp beat by a large margin in that category.

Depends on Vid card..if you have an ATi I would prolly stick with the 9x series..if you got some nVidia goodness, then the FPS hit from
9x->NT is not that bad, 5% difference? Also, your normally tasking will run smoother too. I was hesitant about going 2K, but I took the plunge and I would never EVER have a win 9x OS on my rig again. The only thing I would check is to see if all your hardware has 2k/XP drivers. If you have like 3dfx video card or an Aureal sound card(for example) you don't have driver updates, but there are home grown ones out there...

I have a pretty new install of Win2k Pro (3 months) and I'm getting BSOD's every 4th boot on average.

Because you want to divulge personal information to Microsoft, you want a bunch of useless software bundled with your OS, because you want to pay hundreds of dollars to renew your licence is a couple years
