Theres no really good reasons to use one over the other, at least technologicaly. If you use winXP, and you like it, stay with it. If not, try 2k. Its mostly personal preferences.

EDIT: Oh, I didn't see that you were thinking of going FROM 2k to XP :) Sorry. Unless you like eye candy, there's no reason to upgrade.

Having used both, I don't think that there is a good reason to change. The cost of XP over Win2k doesn't even close to justifying switching. XP has a few minor improvements in things relating to multimedia and I like the dialog boxes for handling things like CF/MM/SM cards. But this just saves a few clicks of the mouse. I don't think it's remotely worth upgrading from Win2k to WinXP. I can think of a lot better uses for $100+ (XP Home upgrade).

There aren't really any significant improvements. Like previously mentioned comments, just the eye candy, but if you turn it off, you won't even notice the difference between Win2k and XP. Just save your money and upgrade some part in your computer. If you're a student, just wait for one of those VisualStudio.NET campus events and pick up a copy of XP. It's your call...

Try XP then. It might fix little problems like those.

Strictly personal. I like group policies which lets me make changes without editing the registry. I like to be able to rollback the drivers if I get a bad driver download. I like having Msconfig in the OS. Most of the new "look" I got used to and like and the parts I didn't like I could easily change. It was the first MS operating system that installed first time without a glitch. The only driver I had to install was my winmodem. Since then I've had to install a couple of upgraded drivers and haven't had a problem.

I thoroughly enjoy Remote Assistance. I have a few friends in other countries who have asked me to change things on their computer and the Remote Assistance has worked well. It works best with highspeed connections at both ends, of course.

I did not have any problems with BSOD on W2K so WinXP is no better but it's no worse, either.

If you really get off on tinkering WinXP will be less satisfying. I have just as much control, or more, but it's less esoteric.

I wouldn't bother with the Home Edition. I'd go with Pro or stick with W2K.
