Why Reveal Personal Details Of Your Life On The Net?

If you are part of an online support group for the particular issue you are facing - understood. You will post and provide details on what happened, how you feel, what you are worried about, how to deal with it, etc. etc.

But, you are on a website, like ATOT, and you are just shooting the shit. Why would you reveal personal details of your life? Or, on sites like Reddit?

There are some pretty specific events that have occurred in regards to your issue, that:
1) can be used against you (to troll, bash, humiliate or even find you)
2) can be discovered by any of the parties involved in your situation (i.e. I got drunk and passed out on my brother's dog, killing it, while I was crashing at his place after I got kicked out of my apartment for running a human trafficking operation because I was looking for someone for my father to torture so that he can stop torturing my sister because she needs to take care of my mom who was just released from prison for attempting to assassinate the President of Bolivia in the 80s)

There are just some things I would not share with any one on the net. In person, with a friend, a shrink or a parole officer - yeah of course.

But, to a random sea of people who may just use my info to harm me or turn out to be someone involved in my craziness - no.

this is why i always reveal the personal details of my twin brother instead. if anything goes down theyll never know it was me

Do you have Facebook / Twitter / Linked-In?

If any of the 3 above apply to you, then you are making an ass of yourself right now...

I see dumb people.

Walking around like regular people. They don't see each other. They only see what they want to see. They don't know they're dumb.

All the time. They're everywhere.

I like to brag about how awesome my life is and I know when people criticize my decisions it's just because they're just jelly. Umad?

How else am I supposed to impress strangers on Internet forums about my used M3 that I will soon have to sell while I'm foreclosed on? :colbert:

lol @ the used beater m3 being the sickest thing on earth. seriously think every third guy on earth has one in their early 20s and of course drives like a jackass and thinks he is just so badass. that or a lancer evolution

Yeah. If they drive a WRX STi, however, they're pretty fucking awesome.

I wish I was awesome. My dream is to be that awesome on the streets. 🙁

note: Lancer Evos and STis are baller. M3s are has-beens. :awe:

You are completely right. It's why I don't do it. Some people just don't understand how vulnerable they make themselves by sharing all this stuff. Granted, I'm tighter with these details than I was back in the past, but even 10-15 years ago I was guarded.

Because some are idiots and everything they post on the Internets is erased by merely deleting the account content.

Same for image copy protection: THEY. DON'T. BLOODY. WORK.

ATOT is an online support group for the socially incompetent. Did you not get the flyer?

Why the hell would you want to interact with people you have absolutely zero intention of connecting with in some meaningful way, either through shared experiences or....

Perhaps you should register on a site where you provide Touring tests for language programs.

edit: Turing tests. I knew that looked weird.

Yup.

Hey I agree with you for once :awe:.

This is pretty typical and predictable of the OP though. Kinda doubt he actually has any friends. Probably a game clan or some shit in reality. He has some paranoia issues. Which is also typical of people who are lonely and use the internet alot (re: not much face to face contact).

We're all friends* here. You can talk to us about anything. Just don't ask us to hang out with you in person.

*Friends = today's definition of pokemon FB collections to show how popular you are even though you've never met 99% of them or even spoke/chatted with 90% of them.

Soft target rule, as long as you aren't the stupidest person on the net, you have a shield of easier targets for the nuts.

OTOH I have joined AT for purely technical reasons, no plans to ever post outside that.
