Been to library today, and saw a thirty-something lady ask how to use the internet...
the librarian told her the computer is connected to network, and she insist on asking how to use the AOL...

hmm...

btw, I still wonder why AOL is the largest ISP whereas there is other better choice..
they DARE to charge ppl $23.99 a month for their crappy service, unless u want to keep your AOL email address, I see no reason to stay with AOL. ATT is the best ISP according to PCworld and is cheaper, I am on NETZERO though and happy with it...
no banner...

for those ppl who pay AOL 300 a year, I called them idixts....
part of their $$$ go to those freaking annoying ad...

My theory: u either pay nothing for cheap dial-up or premium like $40 or 50 on broadband..
I am seeing their annoying TV ad EVERY DAY..
AOL ad "so easy to use, no wonder is #1"...
I want to pew, it SUCKS

btw, I heard that they are going to include their software in every compaq pc shipped with XP...

I hate AOL
AOL SUCKS...
DIE AOL, DIE AOL

at my school, as long as you have an ethernet card, you can plug in and have access to a T1...but you know what all the freshmen that arrive do? they dial-up to their precious AOhell accounts over the phone lines!

and even when they get their ethernet connections, they STILL use AOL (after i convince them to switch over to configuring the AOLhell client for the LAN). it takes them MONTHS b4 i can ween them off it and convince them that instant messenger is the only service they really need!

Well, aren't we the idiot tonight? AOL is still $19.95/$19.99/whatever if you pay by the year (not a binding billing contract)...

if you're joeaverage@aol.com and everyone knows you're joeaverage@aol.com you're not likely to change. you can forward US mail but i'll be aol doesn't do that much. i've had the same mail address for 4 years, and now that i'm forced to lose it (well, they might not delete me from mail.utexas.edu for a long time, some people have been on there 5 years after they graduate) i'm just going to register my own domain and be michael@whateverthehelliwant.com

<ATT is the best ISP according to PCworld and is cheaper>

Edit: forgot quote

Ack! NO ATT! I'd use AOL before I EVER use them again! WARING! IF YOU ARE IN NW PA DO NOT USE ATT! I cite the folloing:
330 AM. My computer shuts down and makes a funny alarm noise. Not cool. Let it cool down. Stil no luck. Seeing as it is has no interchangable parts with anything in my house, I go upstairs and get my old Aptiva with the intention of posting here, as someone HAS to know what the heck is wrong, right?. Now about 3 and a half hours earlier my local ISP (Velocity.net. They Rule) account ran out. Had to wait till morning to renew it, so I switched to my ATT account, my dad got it because his computer dosent stay onto Velocity for some reaoson. Now if youve never used ATT you have to install there crazy software thing, you cant just make a new Dial-Up thing in the Dial-Up folder. So i go grab my little disk and proceed to install ATT on my 233MHz Aptiva with all of 24MB of ram. Now all goes well until I click "connect" says no answer, and redials. I say ok screw it, it might get connected, and I go off to play Sabrina, my sisters new game. About 20 mins later some lady calls and says that she just got a sh!t load of phone calls from my number. Now I WAS using the number that ATT sent me from there server saying that is was my local ATT server thing. BUT IT WASNT! It was this ladys number! ATT says the fixed it, but I am through with them. I'm keeping a Netzero account handy should my Velocity run out again. Viper.

:cool:I signed up for three years with Earthlink and got a $400 rebate on my new PC. So far I like Earthlink. I had AOL once a long time ago but I got too much spam there. On Earthlink I don't get any.

AOL is everwhere. There's hardly any place in the US that you can go and NOT have a local AOL phone number.

AOL is EASY to use for first time computer/Internet users. No matter what, it's still not EASY to just set up your own dialup connection profile and configure your browser for it and your mail client and your news client. An ISP like AT&T that provides an installer that does it for you makes the setup easier, but the programs are still more difficult to understand for a first-timer than AOL, which steps you through EVERY little thing if you want, and you don't have to go searching a support website to get even the basics.

Law of inertia: it's easier to stay where you are than to change. Even after someone is very used to AOL and knows a little about the wider net, it's STILL easier for them to just keep using it, especially if they don't use it for much more than email and some web browsing. And for many, the hassle of starting an account with another provider, figuring out which one to use, setting up all the software, notifying people of the changes to email, all that's just more than it's worth, especially if AOL does what they need it to do and they aren't aware that there are things it doesn't do.

Not everyone CARES about all the stuff that might be available through things other than AOL. If you ask, most people are saying the Internet doesn't really do much for them. A lot of us geeks are here just because we're geeks and have fun with technology (how many of you spend a large portion of your time on the Net just looking at hardware or software reviews or how to make your computer better?). Most people's use of the Net is limited to some online purchasing or product reviews, some email, and occasional web browsing. These things AOL does quite well, even though WE may not like the interface.

I keep an AOL account. It gives me 7 email addresses that AREN'T @Yahoo or @whatever, and some web space (albeit very little). It's useable from anywhere in case I need it, by dialling in OR accessing it via another provider in case I've got Net access already and I can use it for mail and whatnot but still use IE for actual Net. And in the case that my cable modem goes down for an extended period, I can dial into my AOL account if I really need to. This way it only costs me 10 bucks a month.

blah, yahoo and hotmail are fine.. too many moron aol users (altho, the only addition to having aol over yahoo could possibly be it's more "professional" sounding to slap on a resume or something... something my dad was concerned about recently). Of course the whole having the change email thing is also at issue.

But, i'm w/ ElFenix.. if i could figure out a good domain, i need to register it so i can have my own email :)
