Why Overclock?

I've read many overclocking articles and do not really understand why overclocking is such an issue. Why overclock any processor if the stability of the system is threatened? Is the benifit of overclocking worth all the trouble?
:Q
Any opinions?

Overclocking is free for one reason. For another reason with the proper knowledge it is very safe and very stable. Why not maximize your CPU's full potential since most of them are tested to run at higher speeds, and sold at a lower speed for purposes of being safe. The difference between a system running at 155 FSB like mine compared to 133FSB is a big difference. Everything runs faster, games, windows, you name it. Also with the current cooling products on the matket you can crank up your system speed and voltage and still run cool enough to perform very well. One last thing about overclocking, its fun to do, i love seeing what guys were able to get with there systems.

I've been wondering the same thing. What's the point? For older, slower processors, I can understand OCing - you can get more power & run newer software without buying a new CPU. But why OC something that's already in the gigahertz plus range? You're already way ahead of what regular software, and even current games, would require. Bragging rights is the only thing I can think of.

It's a guy thing.

Seriously, I think many of us overclock for the same reason some guys soup up their cars. There's an allure involved with the whole process of taking something stock and pushing it to the max. Bragging rights is certainly a part of it, along with a demonstration of a certain level of competence.
