India has many unique things to see and tasty food so I don't understand the hate.

That said, I think it's really stupid to go wild camping and moving around on a bicycle in poor countries since you make yourself a prime target for thieves. They also camped close to some poor village, which is beyond stupid because people sleeping are an even easier target...
If you want to be alternative and do eco-green trips, do it in safe places like Europe, although it's more difficult to find places to put your tent outside of official camping places so it requires some planning or google maps with satellite pics to find bushy areas. In big cities there are hostels though so that's easy.

In poor countries I'd stick to hotels.

Sleeping in a poor country makes someone a rape target? WTF kind of logic is that?!?

I'm betting they had a ton of security and not just camping in some random spot while biking.

India is a shithole. Lots of places are a shithole, but that doesn't excuse the disgusting gang rapes we keep hearing about. Just like Mexico and its violence, just because Sudan is violent too doesn't make Mexico any less shity.

These threads serve to remind people not to fucking vacation there!

You think people biking across India carry a security detail? lol

I'd happily go to India free. If I had to pay money, there's other places that are higher on my list. India's pretty close to the top of third world countries I'd like to visit.

No that's the point, all those celebrities had security details and why they can go there and do their hippy shit. These Swiss people were by themselves and didn't have that luxury. Any shithole is visitable when you have armed guards. :p

Yes it does. Flashing money in certain neighborhoods in the US makes you a robbery victim. Their actions don't in any way forgive or excuse what the rapists did, they did however put themselves at higher risk. There are always steps you can take to mitigate risk. Or you can lolly-gag through life thinking you are untouchable and nobody should do anything wrong to you and get a very rude awakening. Animals like these gang rapists don't care about what should be, they only care about what is. And those Swiss were easy prey for those predators.

If you're curious.. as someone who traveled there for 3 months this was spot on for me:

I noticed elsewhere that comments from Indians found this to be a really shitty insulting article, but I don't think they understood it just comes from the frustrations of a Western tourist who isn't used to living there.

Are you a politician? You just typed some crap that didn't address your original statement at all...

No, it's not OK stick your head in the sand. Yes, it's OK to point out this behavior.

Bitching about something, and not doing anything about it might as well be sticking your head in the sand.

Personally I don't care about India myself, thus I don't really care what happens over there. But I'm honest enough to admit it.

Thanks. I'll read that in a little bit. I'm listening to Snap Judgment on the radio right now. I can't fully process two types of speech/writing at the same time :^)

What kind of anti-intellectual non-sense is this?

The free discussion of knowledge, events, ideas and society should not be discouraged. Only those who wish to control others typically do this.

Rape and robbery are very different things. I don't give a shit if my crap gets stolen.

Yeah, good job totally missing the point. Sorry it offends your sense of Indian pride, but perhaps you should try to clean up your shithole country instead of bitching about threads like this.

I completely understand your point, and it's bullshit to blame victims because they're foreign, rich, women, or whatever else antiquated labels you want to try and apply. That mentality doesn't fly anymore.

So America is a clean country? Why? The streets look cleaner? Is that how one judges a country? What about the whole rape of an entire group (s) of people? Does that not count? Sorry to mention that but WE, as in the world, are messed up. It is WE who have to change. Singling out people and singling out countries is very convenient. To actually address the bigger problems requires people to actually behave and act differently.

Read it. Ya know, it didn't change my mind much one or the other. It sounds like a fascinating place to visit, but again, if I'm paying money, there's other places I'd rather go. I'm not rich, so I have to prioritize my travel. If I were rich, I'd go in a heartbeat.

I think you probably came away with the right impression. It is not a vacation destination. It takes effort to travel there, both practically in the day-to-day frustrations and on an emotional level around the brutal poverty there. The general environment can be awful, I was in Delhi in August and the heat is mind numbing, piss-you-off kind of heat, stay-still-and-stare-at-the-ceiling-fan kind of heat.

There are some nice spots in the summer, I really enjoyed the Himalayan regions.

But as a place to travel, experience a new culture, "see the world," it can't be beat. I will go back soon.
