My wifes' school district decided to basically gut the school store - an operation that netted the school $105,000+ last school year.
Why? Health reasons. So, under the new guidelines the following items are not allowed:
Pop/soda
chips/chex mix
cookies
non-low fat/sodium crackers
candy bars
Gatorade - or any other kind of sports drink
pretzels
most types of popcorn
granola bars
What is currently sold:
Water
Coming soon:
soy granola bars
low sodium pretzels
popcorn with no salt, butter, artificial flavoring
low fat/sodium crackers
I am sure the students will jump all over the water and...wait....thats all they have to sell now. All they have to do is run their competition out of town. Damn water fountains giving away their water for free! Oh well, I hear that the soy granola bars are hip with the youngsters right now.
As well all know, schools are just bathing in excess cash so this is a great time to cut back on that excessive income! :disgust: I can understand wanting to have the kids eat healthy, but the school is already running a budget deficit and I seriously doubt that the school store will make the same kind of contribution it did last year.
*sigh*
