Why is there not a whole lot of motherboards with AthlonMP support? The chipsets are out there. When VIA/AMD made chipsets before, I remember new boards coming out left and right. Why so slow, why only tyan?
They didn't want huge stability problems with their server chip.
Only letting one motherboard maker at first use the chipset allows them to monitor problems better.
Also Tyan is very reputable in the server market. They wanted a company whos mobos wouldn't be crashing all the time and giving the MP a bad name
exactly like MustPost said... stability is an absolute necessity in the server market... they wanted to concentrate on making MP motherboards with a single manufacturer to start, to show the potential of the chipset, and to attract more manufacturers (seeing how good the chipset is).
and seeing how excellent the Tyan motherboards are (K7 Tiger MP, K7 Thunder MP), I think AMD made a very wise decision.
