just a thought: wouldn't it make more sense to get a jump from the competition by having a "black Wednesday" event?

why not have all shops closed on Black Friday? they'd save on electricity, heating, and employee costs without all of the hassle?

Some retail stores have already changed their opening from 4 am to 12 am (midnight).

Perhaps next year it will be "Black Thursday, f*ck thanksgiving". D:

Because a significant number of shoppers are able to be out shopping on Friday because they get the day off from work.

I realize that but if there a store or two that was offering specials on Wednesday, I would go after work (or even before) specifically to beet the Friday hassle. Also, I would imagine there are plenty of unemployed people, or home makers, or people on vacation would can squeeze in shopping time on Wednesday.

The mall where my girlfriend lives is opening at midnight on Friday this year. She's going to stay up late to go shopping instead of waking up early (which never actually happens).

Black Friday is really already started if you count online sales... Amazon is already discounting movies to price match Black Friday ads. Best Buy also had a few things for sale today for the Silver members (the 24 inch HDTV, etc...).

Because offering specials by themselves doesn't necessarily make you money?

The whole point of Black Friday is to get people to buy your shit, especially the shit that's not marked down. Lots of advertisement to get people into the mood (like chumming for sharks), some specials to lure them into your store, and hopefully they'll do the rest of their holiday shopping there too.

If a store ran a Wednesday special, sure they'd have a lock on being the only store doing it and your specials might sell out but then a lot of people would hold off on spending the rest of their money until Friday to see what else they can get.

Nope, since most people will be working Wednesday and the stores would have a lot less sales. The 4-day weekend allows stores to plan for bigger sales as they know people typically start there xmas shopping the day after thanksgiving.

Black Friday is racist. They should change the name.

It has nothing to do with a person's skin color. 'In the red' means a negative value or below zero. If you were using the overdraft on your bank account you would be operating 'in the red'. 'In the black' is the opposite to this - above zero.

I already heard an ad on the radio for Old Navy saying that they are going to be open all day Thursday.

not in MA. Blue Law says stores cannot be open unless they are convenient stores. Sucks, because Asian supermakets use to open, but now they are forced to close that day because Shaws raged war on supermarkets that open on holidays.

Cyber Week all the way - screw you Black Friday.

All the fat mouth breathers looking to save $10 on Spyro Skylanders can enjoy getting up at 3am to waddle over to "their" store and eat Pizza Hut as they wait for the doors to open.

Don't know where you live, but around here stores are already going nuts with Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday specials, different from the Black (Thursday) Friday ones. Some very tempting stuff. Well, tempting if I had any money.
