The only reason i can really think of is reception. I don't get good reception at home or school, so it would be impracticle. When also use a landline for internet access there.

I went only cell phone this past March when I moved to a new apartment. My old place had horrible cell phone reception so I couldn't ditch the landline. But my new place gives me full signal strength anywhere I stand.

I use cable modem for internet.
My SatTV only needs a landline for pay-per-view, so its no loss there.

I always charge my phone as a I drive from/to work so I never have to worry about the battery dieing. I also have the rapid AC charger as it came standard with the phone (Samsung is so much better than Nokia for that).

My cell phone bill is $40 after all the fees and crap. Gives me more than enough minutes. I see no reason to have a landline that would cost just as much.

But the most important thing about ditching the landline, you have to have perfect reception at home with your cellphone. If not, don't even bother.

Once Sprint upped the signal in my area (Irvine, CA), I decided to cancel my land line. I don't talk on the phone all that much, and I can always use the phone at work for really long calls during peak hours.

My only concern is the 911 thing, but hopefully I won't need to call it anytime soon ;)

Too bad you can't have multiple cell phones on the same number or else I would have ditched my land line too.

Because when I'm asked "Is there any way I can contact you when you're not home?" I LOVE saying "Nope, sure ain't."

If it weren't for these 3 reasons I'd cancel my home phone line.
I have DSL and don't need the phone service. I have a separate Cat5 line coming in from the street :D.
The only reason I keep my local line is for Dish Network. They require you to have one.

I haven't used the "normal" phone in over a year.. I can't think of any reason why I'd need it.

Viper, I do believe 911 is available on ANY phone wether you pay the bill or not.

This is true, 911 is there no matter what.

i think he means that 911 will be able to trace the call if you use a landline, but some times they cant trace cell phones...

I have not had stateside phone service in over 4 years. I had a cell phone in Japan (the birthplace of kewl tech) and got one when I arrived in Florida. Reception inmy apartment is sucky. I have to go out on the patio to talk to anyone. I bumped my service to the cheapest rate/lowest minutes and use it for when I am on the road (I don't answer it anymore, luckily my Ericcson allows me to turn off the ringer/buzzer.) Voicestream is a pretty good carrier, but the reception is marginal in some areas. I like coverage though. It picks up a signal here in Kuwait! Costs $1.99 a minute to call home though :Q

Never had a problem getting reception, it is just "good" reception.
I will probably get land line service when I get back home, just for the clarity. My grandmother is losing her hearing and it is irritating shouting into the phone on the balcony.

I have 100% phone bill. I don't use the hardline at all. And, when I get an appartment, I won't use the hardline there either.

Once I graduate and move to an apartment, I don't plan on getting landline service unless it's included in my rent bill. However, if more than two people are living under one roof, and not everyone has a cell phone, then it makes sense to go ahead and get the landline service (i.e. a family). But for many of us single bachelors who don't have TiVO or a fax machine, I'm all for going wireless.

It's funny, I was JUST thinking about this very thing about 5 minutes ago before getting on here...

You can get multiple cell phones on 1 number here. I'm not sure how it works, but its advertised for familys.

911 works whether or not you pay for your landline. If your land line does not work, 911 should still work. Its the only thing you dont have to pay for. just like at pay phones u dont nee .25 to make a 911 call.

I wouldnt lose my landline for faxes...
it also handles my junk calls.
Cell phone drops too many calls for me to use it as a primary phone.
landline is also good for when cable goes down, and I really want to get something off the net.

Here's a related question: Can you have Pac Bell DSL without any local phone service from them? I've been thinking about doing the same thing, I already lowered it to the measured rate to save on monthly charges since I don't use it, but can I ditch it completely and still keep my dsl?

I would have given thought to this myself except for 3 problems.

1) Business line
2) Signal is so bad most calls done even come in. (no bars on phone)
3) Can't get the data stuff to work on my cell phone so I can send faxes.

100% cell.

A landline phone seems redundant and I am making a (silent) statement to Verizon that I'm not going to spend (another) frickin' $40 for activation. I paid their $40 levy enough times in college. PECO Energy charged me $7 to activate electric, township charged me $15 to activate water/sewer. Cable/internet/cell had no activation charge. Like hell am I going to pay $40 to activate a stupid phone line. It's not really about the money, it's the principle behind it.

Cell plan gives me voice mail, caller ID, call forwarding and other features for "free". Verizon wants $29/month for their "popular" phone package. Bah. That's 3 used DVD purchases a month.
