They should have an i9, but it should be a 16C/32T 4Ghz part w/32MB of cache :D I bet they could actually fit it on a 2011 socket lol.

I'd be fine with just a regular 12C IVY-E/EP die with an unlocked multiplier. Such a CPU would be worthy of extreme in its name and an extreme price tag. I wouldn't care much if it were named i7 or i9 but the former would be more logical. If they are not willing to sell their best chips for 1K USD they should just up the price, the customers of such CPUs would not care. 1kUSD or 2kUSD, who would care? If people pay 2x the price for 5% more performance then they are ideal target market for such CPUs, what would be funny is that they would get more of their money's worth over non-extreme CPUs then current EE cpus owners.

Yes, it was.

The basic concept of i3, i5, i7 is ok.
In my opinion WITHOUT an i9, but calling the socket 2011+ system I9, might make some sense.

But throwing in Pentiums and Celerons, and even making some of them "ATOMS", is making for a very confusing system.

Yup. Pentium and Celeron should be the same name- just call the lot of them Celerons, or i1s, or something.

Why does this exist.

Because Intel (in the Asia division) used them to promote their new Sandy Bridge CPUs. There's even a music video about it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBxW22JLUmg (skip to the end for the familiar Intel chime)

There's also additional ads, a starcraft plugin, etc..

It was supposed to be well-marketed and a huge push in that region

Unfortunately about a couple weeks later, the infamous $700 million SB motherboard recall happened -http://www.anandtech.com/show/4142/intel-discovers-bug-in-6series-chipset-begins-recall , so the promo slowly disappeared...
