Honestly, if there's ever a genre that would be an awesome port on mobile phones, it would be older jrpg style games.

games like ff, chrono trigger, lunar, chrono cross and others really wouldn't suffer all that much from crappy on screen controls. Out of any game genre, rpgs, and jrpgs specially would be fine to play on a mobile phone

Most games people play on phones is just mindless bs, so I think it would be awesome to waste time on my phone grinding than playing some dumb game like angry birds. Didn't ff7 sell a bunch of copies on the psn network? It could possibly sell many copies.

Any other takers?

phone games tend to be quick time wasters that you could play for a few minutes and put down. jrpgs aren't like that at all.

Well i'm saying this because the last few months I've been seeing more full and long games. Gta3 and dead space are two that stick out at me.

I think there's a market for it. Just look at how popular Pokemon games were a while ago on Gameboy. handheld rpgs are great.

There's already tons of 16-bit rpg knockoffs in Android and iOS markets. Many of them are very good.

Hardcore strategy games would be the overwhelmingly best fit for mobile. They do not require immersion or fast and accurate perception of detail, both of which are impossible on mobile displays. They do not require reflexive control which is impossible on touchscreens. They actually work better on touchscreens than gamepads. They typically have a "lazy" rhythm where you play, think, play and that works great when you can easily take out or put away the device. And they frequently benefit from multiplayer which is an obvious fit for an always-connected platform.

The reason strategy, RPGs or adventure games largely don't exist for mobile is the chicken-and-egg problem. Serious gamers know mobile games are crap and stay away, so there's no audience. With no audience, there's no motivation to make good games.

Furthermore, the mobile platforms have taught people to expect rock-bottom pricing. Even supposed "game journalists" make fun of "overpriced" games daring to cost $5. Someone charging $20 would probably be compared to Hitler. Not a problem for the crap that targets everyone and their dog, and gets enough volume to make profit at $1 unit price, but the audience for quality games is much smaller and thus the pricing per game absolutely has to be higher in order to turn a profit. This is now hard to pull off due to the ingrained expectations.

I'm kind of confused, because two out of the four games (two are actually a series, but work with me) are already on iOS (and soon to be Android too). Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 1, Final Fantasy 2, Final Fantasy 3 and Final Fantasy Tactics have been released for iOS, and are slated for release for Android sometime soon. Square-Enix also has their own newer titles such as Chaos Rings, Chaos Rings Omega (prequel) and the upcoming Chaos Rings 2.

There are also plenty of other developers that make RPGs. Although, some may be more of an Action RPG style (Zelda-ish) such as Zenonia.

Couldn't agree more. I couldn't believe people were complaining about GTA being five bucks in the GTA thread on here. I would gladly pay more for quality games on Android.

Didn't know they were out,I have android :(

You would think that gaming on Android should really be stepping up because the hardware is much better (mainly the screen size), but for now ios still more appealing to dev's.

I havent heard of some of those titles, what style are they? I really would prefer a ff7 like game, where if im bored i can go grind and level up my guys. FFX for android would be perfect (battle arena)

Except there's about a billion (exaggeration) different configurations of devices versus a handful of iOS configurations. It's simply easier to ensure things work on iOS.

For Square-Enix games (that are not remakes), you may like Chaos Rings then. I've written up a few things on the game in other forums, but to sum it up... the game has its problems (scaling is not evident, etc.), but it was decent. I spent about 10-12 hours overall with one set of characters. There's also Gameloft's Eternal Legacy, which is pretty much a FF10 clone. Although, I don't like how the game chooses the moves that your teammates do.
