Why nerds are unpopular.

He's not too smart if he just figured this out. I knew this back in high school when I was unpopular.
Although I disagree with his statement that it takes work to be popular. I think it takes conformity which really doesn't require any work at all.

Intelligence has nothing to do with it. I go to a selective school, some people are considered "nerds" because of their habits, they work hard, they try, the behave well and are less "rebellious" than those who are not called "nerds".
Since this school is basically full of probably above average intelligence kids, it's not how clever people are that makes them "nerds" but what they do.

being smart doesn't make you a nerd. i was in a lot of AP classes during my sophmore year, and a majority of the people i knew from these classes were quite popular. Being stupid doesn't make you cool in HS. Its your personality. Being smart and being reserved and restarined are two completely different things, and they have no correlation to each other. You can be a smart geek that dresses nice, has good hygiene etc... I feel that intelligence is one of the lowest steps on the ladder to being popular in high school.
Kindof... although the "smart" popular kids are never as "smart" as the "smart" nerds...at least in my experience

Jr high... meh. At least high school isn't like that, so kids can recover before going to college where they can smoke weed.
Most popular kids at my high school were the smartest. I was definately a nerd, but I was relatively friendly with some of them.

I don't know about this. I was pretty smart (graduated the 2nd in my HS) and yet i was reasonbly popular. Not the most popular kid in school, but somewhere in the upper half.

From what I read it seems fairly accurate, & fairly representative of my years in public schools.
Thankfully I was relieved of that at age 14, & entered a world where as long as you acted like an adult you were treated as such. I loved it.

People with the highest GPA aren't generally the smartest, in my experience.

I knew plenty of kids who were very smart and popular. But they also had to be either athletic, good-looking, etc to be hanging with the 'A' crowd. Very few just happened to fall into place due to their charming/endearing personality or whatever. And if they did, they usually didn't last and fell from grace very quickly. Ahh, the social issues of middle school and high school. While you still bump into it from time to time in the 'real world' it's so nice to not have to deal with it on a daily basis.
I agree with you. I think being popular revolves around your personality, and how you deal with people. A lot of popular kids were honor graduates from my school.
Well, I'm no idiot. I did well in college (without trying much) and now I'm a successful software developer. I read books and watch news, can talk about politics, music, computers, cars, etc. Outside of this, I don't know what your definition of intelligence is... I have a friend who's also pretty smart, and also fairly popular. I think the concept that smart=unpopular is something nerds make themselves believe in.
I was a freak, and my friends were nerds. 
To this day, I far prefer freaks (who have settled down) and nerds to the 'popular' types. Who wants to be popular, anyway?

I'm just happy that in my school, such things weren't as obvious/pronounced as in others.
Even if it was, I wouldn't have cared. I had my friends and we didn't give a sh~t what anyone else thought of us.

While most of the time this rings true there are plenty of examples to the contrary. There was one guy from my HS that stands out the most. 4.0 through HS, AP classes, class president, varisty football/basketball/baseball, academic decathlon, mock trial, and in speech (award winning). That guy was friggin perfect.
I'm don't have super academic records but I was far from popular in Middle School or High School. What category do I fit in?
Well, being homeschooled, I don't have to put up with it all day, but at other times when I have to interact with other teens, it is usually somewhat painful, as I am a so-called "nerd." Perhaps it has to do with the fact that since I don't listen to the (c)rap that is popular today, I don't understand gh3tt0 sp34k and can't understand a single damn thing of what those "cool" people are saying. Or maybe it's because, although I wear good clothes, I don't spend totally unreasonable amounts of money on clothes to get a certain brand that people wear simply for the name. Other kids tell me that when I talk, I am very hard to understand because I use "big words." Maybe that's because I occasionally throw in a word or two that is longer than their typical idea of an "average" word - one with four letters. Whatever happened to just getting a dictionary if you didn't understand something, or logging on to dictionary.com?
