Write Cacheing is a firmware issue. It's something the engineering samples sent out for preview had off, thus turning in some poor performance on real world tests. Sounds like you might have bought a pre-release raptor as opposed to a retail one :(

I couldn't find any firmware updates for you, maybe if contact one of the AnandTech Staff (if they still have it) or Western Digital they might give it to you.

I would contact western digital see if you can get a firmware update or get the better drive. I don't think your drive should've been sold.

Hmm I have made a test in PcMark2002 and I have only 775 Pts. .My next Wd Caviar 800JB has 1068 Pts. :( Maybe my controller HPT347 is not good for this drive.
MotoAMd: I dont have this field in Properties uncheck Write Cache :( .Maybe this driver does not support Write cache.

I have the same mobo, with 2 WD400JBs in RAID 0, and Sandra gave me the same crap. That section under policies is grayed out. However, under 'SCSI properties', there are two options: 'Disable tagged queueing' and 'Disable synchronous transfers'. Anyone know what these are for? Perhaps this could be the key. Sounds like they would work anyway. Hey Chris, when you got the motherboard, what version of the BIOS did you have? I had a old one, but couldn't get the RAID drivers to work right with a fresh install of XP. I had an old BIOS (when you flash it, the 374 gets flashed too), but it said I could do RAID 5, which would figure because that chip is huge, way bigger than the one on my Adaptec 1200A, the same size as the one on the cards that do do RAID 5. Just curious about that last part, Thx

To enable write cacheing. Click my computer then right click on the drive and select properties. Select hardware highlight the drive and click properties. Click policies and optimize for performance

There is no way you ended up with a preproduction drive. None at all. Even if by some complete freak accident, you did, you would know right away by the drive label with the large BETA SAMPLE stamped on it. There are multiple places that write cache can be enabled and disabled, the drive, the controller, and windows, though it is more than likely that you can't use any of them to actually change the setting. I doubt there is anything wrong with the drive. It's probably the piece of junk Sandra benchmark that is messed up. Try using something like ATTO which gives more consistent results.
