Dam, this card may go back. I just got it and I have 30 days to test it out. The only thing is the only other card I could get is the Radeon 64Meg for $290US and that is $100 more than I want to spend.

Buy the way I got the 5500 for $189

The difference is really stunning. You have to play through the levels to really appreciate it. You need a pretty decent system and lots-o-ram for it to really work well.

i doubt it, unless it checked wether the textures were in a precompressed state or not. even then, we'd be back to the famous ol nVidia on-the-fly compression method, which has had it's share of checkerboard lightmaps in q3.

There are not extra levels on the 2nd CD. The 2nd CD has high res textures that are used in the normal maps.

"is there a way to play levels with s3tc textures without having the 2nd cd?"

Nope, you need to have both CDs for it to work. With GOTYE coming soon, with all the added features and levels, it should have the second CD included(or maybe three?). Saw it advertised for presales at $17.99, time to pay up:)

Doesn't work for me at all...

Followed the hack instructions EXACTLY and I get a run time error, something about not finding the "galaxcy package" and it lock up the computer. Wondering if something on disk 2 overrode some other settings. Using reference 6.18 drivers with a Creative GeForce DDR.

So be aware that this hack may screw you...you have been warned !

Backed up my .ini file and DLL so I can try and restore. I recomend you guys do the same first. This kind of stuff can cause more pain then it's worth...be carefull !

FOLLOW UP...a while laters:

I restored my old setting's now and D3D is back up and running fine. Ne reinstall needed. If anyone can shed some light as to why this failed for me I'd like to know why ?

Thanks !

MSNY-

Galaxy is the audio portion of UT. If everything went as it should not one bit of the Galaxy portion should have been touched. Perhaps there was an error in the UT.ini file? If you want to give it another shot(backing up first), and still have the errors send me a copy of your-

C:UnrealTournament/System/UnrealTournament.ini

And

C:UnrealTournament/System/UNREALTOURNAMENT.log

And whatever the conflict is will be apparent. The modifications done don't touch any of the Galaxy code at all, I have no idea why you would get the error message?? Not saying I don't believe you in anyway, just extremely odd that it would show up.

Syborg1211-

"How do I enable the fps counter in UT?"

Hit the "~" key to bring down the console and type "Timedemo 1" without the "" and then hit enter(hit the "~" key again to hide the console).

To turn it off repeat but change to "Timedemo 0" instead of 1.

OK I tried it again and now it WORKS !!!!

Guess I screwed up somehow the first time. It really is stunning and I now endore it fully. GET THIS HACK IF YOU WANT TO PLAY THIS GAME THE WAY IT SHOULD BE ! IT'S PRETTY !

Of course OpenGL tends to be a lot darker...any suggestions to brighten it up besides turing up the monitor or the in game brightness control ???

How about a mailing list for future changes to keep us informed ?

Thanks BenSkywalker !!!

P.S I'm at 60fps 800x600 32 bit all high detail. Thats 10fps better then D3D settings on my machine.

The Corona or Glare around lights has a stepped or banded look. Is this normal?

JonJon-

"if you really wanna see ut run, get a v5 and run it in glide"

Ewww, with low res non compressed textures:p<shudder>

Just too ugly to stand:)

Edit-

"The Corona or Glare around lights has a stepped or banded look. Is this normal?"

Unfortunately, yes. One of the problems with S3TC compression is light maps. Disabling Coronas(set to False) eliminates the problem.

Brightness-

Bump the gamma up about .5 in the display properties before you enter the game. That takes care of the brightness isssue. This may be fixed in upcoming releases, it needs to be tied in with the Windows display properties(remember that this is a Linux native patch).

MSNY- YGM and a reply over at GB(though I said the same thing there that is ^^)
