Question Why my Overclocked Ryzen 3700x not showing any performance increase in Game FPS as well as 3ds Max Render time?

Hi.

I have assembled my desktop computer recently. Im fairly new to overclocking. I overclocked my ryzen 7 3700x from 4.05Ghz(Auto OC) to 4.4Ghz with CPU voltage of 1.35V and SOC Voltage of 1.15V.
The problem is I do get amazing Cinebench scores, but I do not see any improvement in performance in terms of 3d rendering applications like 3ds Max & Houdini. Also, I dont see any FPS improvement running games like Assassins crees Odessey, Cyber Punk, Horizon Zero Dawn.

I ran Aida64 test for 30 mins. Ran Prime95 with 1 thread for 15 mins. The temperatures hover around 80-85 C. Im suprised that with 4.4Ghz, its not showing any instability issues. Im sure I havn't done the overclock correctly.

Yes. The games I have tested are GPU bound. But I expect a couple of frames to increase.
Whereas, the applications Houdini & 3ds max rendering are highly CPU bound. And I get no improvements in the render timings.

Since they're bottlenecked by the CPU, increasing CPU speed should help alleviate that bottleneck. If you're GPU is pegged @ 100% when gaming, you're not going to see much (if any) improvement from OCing the CPU. I have an RX580, which is a bit slower than the 1660 but in the same league, and I can tell you the difference between a R5-1600 stock, @ 4.4ghz, and a R5-3600 @ stock or all-core OC of 4ghz, the difference in FPS is deminimis.

My guess is that the rendering is using AVX and other heavy instructions, and your cooling isn't enough to prevent throttling/downclocking for stability. Try going back to stock, benchmarks, and then going up by 100mhz each time. Once you find where the CPU peaks for performance, there is your OC.

I am by no means an expert OCer, double so with the newer Ryzen CPU, but that is what I would do in your situation.

It's pretty rare to get a 3700x sample that can handle 4.4 Ghz in a lot of workloads. If you have one then good on you. But yeah something's really off with the 3ds MAX render times etc. You need to monitor temps when overclocking and check for possible throttling and other undesirable behavior.
