WHY my DVD Drive is ON/OFF?

In Jan. we put together this NEW 'puter - I had a Lite-On CDRW and DVD Rom both installed in it. Initially, we had the CDRW as the Slave - the DVD as Master and I don't remember any problems. Many I read here and there mostly suggested that the CDRW should be the Master. I had a friend change it that way - and every since I SOMETIMES have problems. Not always BUT sometimes.
This is what happens - after bootup and watching the DVD/CD Drive light blinking - until it stops, indicating it has figured out what is in the drive. I can OFTEN (not always) go to My Computer - and NO CD will be shown in the drive (when there is one). I can and do try double clicking on shortcut to that game - and it will tell me to insert the cdrom (which is already in the drive). When you go to Device Manger/System/CDROM.....it always says "this device is working properly". BUT it IS NOT working (the lazer" I guess.
I end up opening and closing the drawer on the drive anywhere from 1-6 or 7 times before the CDROM in the drive is finally recognized.
Do you think this problem stems from the DVDROM not liking to be a SLAVE (wants to be set FREE - heehee) and wants to be da MASA! OR - do you think that my esentially new LiteOn 16/48 DVDrom drive has a problem or BOTH????

Which cd/dvd device is the one that you are trying to read from to play your game? Just cause winblows doesn't detect a problem with the device(it just has to get a signal for it to be "working properly" not actually play a cd), doesn't mean that there isn't a problem with the laser or something else. You might try cleaning the drive with a cleaner cd and then try it again. I had a dvd rom that was having problems reading my old Nox cd, it didn't have a problem before that but I think it dirtied up the laser cause all of a sudden it wouldn't read any cd or dvd correctly. I cleaned it and it seems to be working faster and better than it did when I first got it(it doesn't take any time at all to read a disc now).

Try cleaning that sucker and see if that's the problem cause windows doesn't say there's anything wrong with the drive and it lights up and everything. My dvd would give me a bsod when trying to read a cd sometimes before I cleaned it, that's how bad it got. I thought I just wore it out but that wasn't the case.

TKS Maverick - I might end up trying that, BUT, being brand new - it does not seem like the lazer (CD/DVD) would be dirty, I haven't put any dirty CD's in it anyway. Maybe, you think, that something may have fouled it up at the factory and a cleaning MIGHT clear it up??
BTW - to answer your question, I use the DVD/CDROM drive to play CDROM Games - and it is the drive having the reading problems. I leave my Game, say, Serious Sam, in the drive, boot up, and my puter sees the DVD Drive - BUT - NOT the CDROM Game that is in the drive. I then have to, like I said, open and shut the frawer until sooner or later IT will SEE the disc.
