why must you have your seat fully upright for takeoff and landing?

is that entire 3 inches of movement that airline seats are capable of really going to make a difference in the event of some takeoff or landing emergency?

any aircraft engineers and/or safety specialists that can shed some light on this seemingly silly requirement?

only read if you care why i care: (i like to sleep on flights, and i like to get started as soon as i sit down. considering its often 20 minutes from boarding time to takeoff, and considering they make you bring your seats up when they begin descent which is usually about 20 minutes before landing, thats usually 40 minutes of time per flight where you cant have your seat back

since most domestic flights are probably around the 2 hour mark for me, thats like one third of the flight. since i dont want to be awakened for someone to tell me to move my seat upright, i usually just end up sleeping with it upright.)

When a plane crashes or goes through something crazy, the position they tell you to take is to bend forward over your legs and cover your head. By having your seat up you're more able to take that positiion.

Because I don't want to hit my head on your seat.

I always like having my tray table down to put a book or something on. I always thought it was stupid, but I guess now I know why they make you put it up.

People have survived plane crashes.

People have also survived falling from an airplane.

I for one will take being comfortable.

In case something happens, it is easier/faster for passengers to get out and evacuate the plane with all seats & tray tables up...

You for one are just plain stupid.

You would rather be confortable or try to improve your survival chances in a plane crash?

The seat must be retracted to allow people to bend their torso unto their lap. This is done for several reasons: There are no airbag in planes keeping you from smashing your face into the seat in front of you. Your only restrain is the lap belt, in the event of a crash your torso would be flung forward violently into the seat in front of you.
It just makes sense to adopt a position that minimises the risks to yourself and others.

Chill out Number1.

I also believe the odds of having an accident during a take off or landing is much more probable than actually being in the air.

Chances of surviving a plane crash is very slim to none.
So I doubt the 3 or so inches that the sean leans back is gonna make much of a difference

Given that most fatalities aren't from the impact, but the inability to get out of the plane and die from smoke, you WILL put your seat up if you are sitting in front of me. Or I'll put it up for you.

you only need to do it on takeoffs and landings. the few minutes of intrusion into your relaxation is nothing. the slim the chance it may save your life or someone else's is worth it.

Doesn't really bother me all that much...I mean it's mostly for safety purposes...besides the flight I'm going on in September....the 20 minutes of seating/taking off, then 20 minutes of landing is like 4% of my total flight time :p
