Why must 85% of Sci Fi channel programming be an accomplishment in

Alright, so a few days a week between classes/during summer I get to catch X-Files and SG-SG1 on sci fi. These shows absolutely rock. At least the Stargate episodes where Jack O'Neill is still on the show do.

What amazes me is a station that could concievably air all types of great stuff instead airs:

- Endless amounts of utter shit-grade B movies

- Shows That Suck

Like:

Ghost Hunters
Painkiller Jane (sucks but like the main actress)
Eureka (this show is so unclever and obviously formulaic its offensive)
Flash Gordon (formulaic crap so implausible it makes me wonder at humanity)
A reality show filled with people wearing capes called "Who Wants to Be a Superhero"

Stargate Atlantis - I fell in love with SG-1, but Stargate Atlantis is filled with fucking morons. It infuriates me. The characters are total idiots, there is no way they would be any sort of elite group. SG-1 characters are superb.

Atlantis? I've only managed view portions of a few episodes. This show makes me feel like I'm at a carnival and some vendor is serving manure but is telling me its steak tar tar

The following characters on this show are irredeemable and should be killed:

http://www.scifi.com/atlantis/cast/mckay/index.html > Especially these two asshats
http://www.scifi.com/atlantis/cast/dex/index.html >
http://www.scifi.com/atlantis/cast/sheppard/index.html

The channel is very disappointing. Taken was a great mini-series though.

Good sci-fi is expensive to produce/buy. That crap is cheap enough for a cable channel that is in the uper 50's of most cable dials to afford.

Scifi has mostly gone down hill.
I used to watch the channel alot but when they started with all the ghost hunter, bad bad bad scifi movies I just lost interest.
Then they had to go and put ECW on scifi, what does that have to do with scifi ?

My one exception is that I do like Eureka.
I watch it for laughs, not hard science.

If you really want to see a useless channel check out the former techtv now G4.
Techtv was useful, G4 is not something I would wipe my *ss with.

The channel I watch now more than any other is the history channel.
I think its more like the discovery channel used to be.
Love The Universe series on history channel, learned tons from that series.

Oh MST3K, how we miss you.:(

The sad part is, after Sci-Fi canceled the show, I guess for having too-low ratings, I've seen some of the same movies that were on MST3K aired as regular features on the Sci-Fi channel. Totally horrible movies, whose unfiltered exposure to the public should have been considered a horrific crime against humanity, were being shown in their original form.

Indeed. ;)

It was always best to watch when you were a little tired. Funny stuff.

I have to agree. It's very comedic how craptacular it is. It's actually kinda addicting.

discovery has made leaps and bounds of progress lately. Alot of the shows that were crap and didn't belong are gone, and stuff like planet earth has been very solid.

I like Eureka also. Like the poster above who commented about it, I watch it for the humor also. Yeah, it's formulaic, but it's very entertaining. I never could get into SG: Atlantis; in part because the first time I saw Sheppard, he was supposedly this elite military guy, but he had a haircut that looked like he'd fit right in at an LA club. Credibility gap.

I was with you until you started wanting to kill off Atlantis cast members. McKay is hilarious and Shepard is right behind him. The writers are already turning things upside-down(Beckett: gone, Weir: gone, Carter: moved over from SG-1), I'd rather not have the writers messing with the Core 4 (Dax, Shepard, McKay, and Teyla) too.

I can't really think of a time when Sci-Fi channel didn't suck. I remember anticipating its release and being pretty much horrified once it finally was. I think the only reason they stay in business is through the revenues they derive from the imbicels who get their idiotic movies displayed. At least I HOPE the channel gets paid by those idiots... god knows advertising money would be just about squat.

Most of the original made for Sci-Fi movies and series are so bad, they're funny. I would almost prefer that all they did was air re-runs of decent sci-fi shows all the time, that way I could tune in whenever I wanted and something watchable would be on, even if I had seen it before (i.e. stuff like the Star Treks, Stargates, Farscape, B5, Firefly, X-Files, Dr. Who, Twilight Zone, even some of the recently cancelled stuff like Threshold and Surface). Mix in a lineup of sci-fi themed "movie studio" movies that might not be in high demand with the networks. Add to it a few decent original shows (a la Atlantis and Eureka, which are both mildly entertaining, can most of the rest of the crap) and a powerhouse or two (i.e. BSG) and you'd have the recipe for a decent sci-fi channel.

Then again, syndication can be ridiculously expensive as well, I guess. So maybe there just really isn't enough budget to go around.

Yea but sometimes it is good to sit down and watch a movie so terrible that you can't help but laugh at it... but you're right, more classic sci-fi would probably be better. might even get some people into the genre

also why did it take people so long to mention BSG? that is a great show

Hahah yeah they are idiots. The crew seems to give up control of Atlantis to anyone they can find.

Of all the characters I thought they would get rid of, I thought Teyla would be the first. She is the most completely useless, followed by Dr. Weir.

Sc-fi Channel used to be good back in the early to mid 90s.

Now its full of natural disaster and huge bug/animal movies. There's hardly any sci-fi any more.

BSG and Doctor Who are good. Dresden Files was decent until it was cancelled. I think your estimate is off... I'd say 93%

I love the ECW they show on teh sci-fi channel. Its is indeed fiction and there is some science to the steroids being used.

I think you're being too generous with your grading.
However, that doesn't stop me from laughing through the SciFi Cheesy Movie o' the Week. When I think of all the unemployed actors that exist, I wonder how they can unfailingly find the absolute worst ones.
