My brother still runs Windows 98SE on his desktop pc.
For his needs, it works fine. As to my XP & apps, a lot
will depend on IF I need the very latest updated versions
of some or all of those apps,to just the cost of buying
the newest version. Some programs, get lifetime free upgrades
to newer versions. Big ticket ones, like Office, Arcobat, Quickbooks,
Autocad make you pay dearly for the latest / greatest (? ?) not always
version. For business user, yes, you may want / need / require the
newest. For most home users, probably not.

XP will stay for me for at least another 5 years or so.

Thats going to be difficult. In in another year, possibly 2, most software will be written for Vista, not XP. Vienna will also be coming down the pipeline. Continuing to use XP will be like using Windows 3.11 at the release of WinXP.

Then again, it could be like using Win2K at the release of Vista. It's more common than you think.

Not in a desktop environment I dont think. Corporate? Sure. But more and more companies are moving away from win2k as well. I work for a Fortune 15 company and we JUST migrated to XP from win2k. YMMV, but Im sure alot of business environments will stick with win2k for awhile. I honestly dont know why anyone would use win2k for home use.

Just MHO though.

As a daily user of Mac OS X, Ubuntu and Vista, I'm keenly aware of what works and what doesn't. Mac and Linux work.

I, too, am a daily user of Mac OS X, Ubuntu and Vista (and XP!). While I favor Linux and OS X over Windows, I haven't found Vista to be as horrible as everyone seems to say it is. With that being said, I haven't been particularly impressed, either.

Vista's not so hot, but I'll take it over XP (my nemesis!) any day. There are some great features missing from Vista, and certainly it's not particularly intuitive when it comes to networking, but I think it's a logical evolution (not a revolution, of course) from XP.

The big issues for me and Vista are Program Incompatability with most of my existing software
even though most of it is only 1 -2 years old. Also, alot of hardware does not yet have Vista Drivers
and some items never will. Also, my rig is too old for Vista .. Dell 8200 at 1.8Ghz and only 512MB
of Rambus Ram ... very expensive to upgrade that ram and the rest of the unit might not work with
Vista. Next new pc I buy will likely come with it wether I want it or not.

i recently went back to xp from vista. trust me not by choice i loved vista i just forgot my install disc at home, i am at college, so i have to wait a bit before i can but vista back on my machine. vista is a great os. anyone who says otherwise either hasnt used it for any real period of time, not 2seconds at best buy well you wait for the lines to get shorter, but really used it would know that it is a solid, stable, and comfortable os. i miss vista and frankly using xp now feels like i went back to windows 98 or something it feels dated and limited. Vista x64 i miss you.
